Florida DB still looking at MSU
One of the top uncommitted safety prospects in the nation for the class of 2011 is Larry Franklin of Vero Beach High school in Florida. SpartanMag.com was able to catch up with the 6-foo-0, 185-pound prospect and get the latest on his recruitment.
Franklin has been a player the Michigan state staff has been actively recruiting since they offered him a scholarship last spring. The Spartans hosted Franklin on an official visit back in October and the 3-star prospect has the following to say about his time in East Lansing:
"The trip this past weekend was awesome. I loved it there. The best part was getting to watch the game. I give the trip a 10 (scale of 1-10). It was great. It was everything I expected and more."
Since that time the Michigan state Coaching staff, led by primary recruiter Pat Narduzzi has kept in frequent contact with Franklin to make sure he knows that he is a player they would love to see in Green and White. Franklin talked about his contact with Michigan State.
"I spoke with Michigan State earlier this week," Franklin stated. I had my in-home with them last month, it went well. I am still undecided I am still looking at making arrangements to take a couple of more visits."
Like many Florida recruits, Franklin is not in a hurry to make his choice. Sunshine State products often take multiple visits and then make their decision just prior to signing day. In years past, players like Jairus Jones, Denzel Drone and Justin Wilson all made late January decisions to commit to Michigan State.
Franklin has over 15 scholarships on the table, but he told us that he is still only considering a few other programs in addition to the Spartans.
"I am looking at Tennessee, Illinois, Wisconsin and Maryland, he stated. All of those schools have offered me except Tennessee."
The Maryland Terrapins are in the middle of a coaching change and according to SpartanMag.com sources, the Badgers are very close to being filled up as far as scholarships for the class of 2011. Wisconsin just took a commitment over the holiday from Florida DB Devin Gaulden and wisely decided to offer J.J. Watt's younger brother Derek Watt a full scholarship rather than a grey-shirt.
The Spartans are also recruiting Franklin's teammate, offensive guard prospect Marcus Jackson. The 6-foot-2, 315-pound Jackson was at one point a Miami commitment, but opened his recruitment back up due to the firing of Randy Shannon. Jackson officiall visted Michigan State the same weekend Franklin did back in October. Jackson has indicated that he is down to 3 schools, Michigan State, Miami and Tennessee.
Look for more on Franklin's recruitment as well as that of Jackson's in the near future.
