Covington leaves door open
North Carolina and Wake Forest were once in a dead heat for Charlotte (NC) Mallard Creek cornerback Anthony Covington, but things have changed.
Covington, who is rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com, has not heard much from UNC since Tuesday, March 20 when his teammate Brian Walker verbally committed to the Tar Heels.
"They've [UNC) quieted down a little bit," Covington said. "My interest in them is still there. I definitely wouldn't mark them off of my list by any means, but the communication has dwindled down just a little bit."
He added more offers have come into play and some schools are coming back into the picture of his recruitment. Covington hopes to visit Clemson, Duke, Georgia Tech, Maryland, Miami (Fla.), Purdue, Vanderbilt, Virginia and Virginia this summer.
"Is Wake still one of my top schools? Of course; it's a great school," Covington said. "The communication is still there. Do I still have a lot of schools that I have to put into perspective up against Wake? Yeah, I do, so hopefully I'll be able to get a better evaluation for some of these schools."
Lonnie Galloway is recruiting the 5-foot-10 and 185-pound Covington for the Demon Deacons.
Last season Covington intercepted five passes to help Mallard Creek advance to the fourth round of the state playoffs and finish with a 13-1 record.
