Five Questions for 2012: What will be the offense's identity?

size="4">No. 2: What will FSU's offensive identity be in 2012?
Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher's offense is a pro-style offense that incorporates plenty of play-action passes. But with the offensive line struggling last season to run the ball, the play-action became ineffective. FSU averaged just 3.3 yards per rush, but 8.7 yards per drop-back in 2011.

With a lack of running game to keep things balance, could FSU decide to spread things out in 2012 and rely heavier on the arm of quarterback EJ Manuel? FSU ranked 16th in the nation in passing efficiency a year ago and returns eight of its top ten pass catchers. FSU scored 25 times through the air in 2011 and 20 times on the ground.

Knowing that the strength of Florida State in 2012 will be the defense, I fully expect Jimbo Fisher and the offense to try and maintain a balanced attack. Certainly the running game was abysmal a year ago, but Fisher will want to try and pound the rock in order to maintain possession and grind opponents down. However if the young offensive line is unable to control the line of scrimmage again in 2012, FSU certainly has the weapons to spread the field. With a plethora of receivers and a quarterback that is a threat to run like EJ Manuel, FSU could really do damage to opposing defenses with multiple receiver sets out of the shotgun. But in reality I expect the offense to have a more conservative identity that features multiple tight ends and an attempts to establish a running game, picking its spots to stretch the field.
