Entering the 2012 season, most positions on the field for the Mountaineers have a clear-cut hierarchy of upper and lower classmen, helping teach the intricacies of the college game and adding depth for the upcoming season.

For the defensive line, the hierarchy might be a little more difficult to determine. The Mountaineers only return seniors Jorge Wright, J.B. Lageman and junior Will Clarke, of those with significant playing time from the previous season. According to Clarke, this forces the team to step their leadership and help accelerate the development of the younger players and each other.
