In 1999 Mississippi State enjoyed one of its most successful seasons on the gridiron.
That also happens to be the last time the Bulldogs began the year 1-0 in the Southeastern Conference. After dropping twelve straight SEC openers, MSU hopes to end that skid today at 11 a.m. hosting Auburn.
That is not the only streak alive as the Tigers have won the previous four meetings and nine of the last 10. Auburn leads the overall series 60-23-2 and are 12-4-1 in games played at Davis Wade Stadium. The Tigers are 18-1 in their last 19 initial league games.
However the last two games have been decided by one score as the Tigers claimed a 17-14 victory in their last visit to Starkville in 2010 and also a 41-34 win on the plains last year. Auburn was able thwart a fourth quarter rally by the Bulldogs last fall and stuffed quarterback Chris Relf at the goal line as time expired.
