Spartans offer Virginia standout
This past weekend Michigan State hosted several outstanding prospects for the class of 2015, one of which was Ricky DeBerry of St. Christopher's High School in Richmond, Virginia. SpartanMag.com was able to speak with the 6-foot-2, 237-pound recruit and got the latest details on this impressive player.
When Mark Dantonio was an assistant coach at Michigan State University the Spartans recruited several outstanding players from Virginia to come and play in the Big Ten. Coach Dantonio would love to re-establish that tradition and new Defensive Line Coach Ron Burton, a Virginia native, is leading the way.
DeBerry is one of the players that Coach Burton and Coach Dantonio have identified as a Plan A recruit for the class of 2015. D
Deberry was in East Lansing for the Green and White game and SpartanMag.com spoke with DeBerry about his visit.
"Michigan State is a great place and I enjoyed the coaching staffs hospitality," DeBerry said. "I really like what they have done with the program so far. I did not know they have 47,000 students there."
Getting arguably the #1 prospect in Virginia on campus as a junior for the Green and White game is a big positive for Michigan State. We asked DeBerry about his current scholarship total and his relationship with his primary recruiter.
"I have 23 offers now," DeBerry said. "Coach Burton is a great guy as well. He is from Richmond and attended Highland Springs High School."
Despite all of the scholarship offers, DeBerry is still in the early stages of his recruitment. He still has numerous schools he wants to visit and at this point he does not foresee making a college decision anytime soon. He recently told Rivals.com University of Virginia site the following:
"I don't really think about it because me and my dad say we're going to wait it out until the end," DeBerry told CavsCorner. "So [the process] really doesn't get to me as much [as it would]. When I get [an offer] I say, 'Thank God,' and I appreciate the coaches giving me the offer, but I try to remain humble."
The next step for Michigan State University will be to get DeBerry back on campus this fall so he can see a game at Spartan Stadium. Do not be surprised if Coach Burton invites DeBerry and his family up the weekend of November 2nd when the Spartans host the Wolverines. That would be an exceptional opportunity for DeBerry to see Big Ten football intensity and atmosphere at it's best.
SpartanMag.com will continue to follow the recruitment of DeBerry in the coming months. You can be sure that Coach Burton will be keeping in frequent contact with this outstanding recruit for 2015.
Matt Dorsey's Take: One of the positive factors for Michigan State in Deberry's recruitment is his desire to play for an outstanding defense that has a history of helping players reach their full potential.
Under Mark Dantonio the Spartan defense has risen to the top of the Big Ten. With that has come players being drafted to the NFL in every position unit.
Outstanding Spartan defense is not a one year peak like at many schools. This fall the Spartans are expected to field the top unit in the conference for the 3rd consecutive season. That is a sign of proper evaluation and more significantly, player development.
