Workout Insider: Will there be a drop-off at LB?
With preseason practices just three short weeks away, the strength and conditioning staff is starting to tone down the daily workouts. On Monday and Tuesday of this week, instead of the grueling conditioning sprints and work capacity circuit training drills, the players went through strength and performance testing. On Tuesday, the varsity players were tested in the 10-yard dash and the pro agility run, while the newly arrived freshmen were tested in the 40-yard dash.
At the completion of the testing, the varsity players took to the practice fields for a round of 7-on-7 drills. The passing drills started up last Monday and will likely continue until preseason practices start up on August 8th.
"It's kind of fine-tuning before two-a-days," quarterback Drew Weatherford said. "To be honest, we probably as the offense get the most out of running one-on-ones and throwing it and just getting our timing and rhythm down. When we get in 7-on-7 the defense doesn't have to play honest because there are no coaches out there watching them for one thing and they know we aren't running the ball so they drop real deep. So it's kind of hard."
