Friday Practice Report: Defense
Even with all of the confusion about players withdrawn from practice due to clearinghouse issues, the Wildcats took to the field to finish up fall camp Friday night. Here are some highlights from the defensive side of the ball.First off, Devin Ross being in uniform and on the field was enough to warrant a highlight. Throughout fall camp Ross has shown the ability to come in and contend right away and will likely see significant amounts of playing time during the fall. He will be one player to keep an eye on during Saturday's scrimmage at Arizona Stadium.
Louis Holmes looked very solid. He got to the quarterback twice; once Austin and once Tuitama. When he first arrived at camp he was noticeably thinner, but still in football shape. Now that fall camp has concluded, Holmes looks as impressive as he has been at any time. Also keep an eye on him during Saturday's scrimmage.
While allowing a few touchdowns, the secondary looked solid Friday night. Antoine Cason was very impressive in swatting away touch passes thrown by Tuitama and Austin. Cason denied two touchdowns on his own.
Dominic Patrick looked very aggressive while on the field. He was being very physical with receivers and anyone who came into his part of the field. Patrick and Nate Ness split time and both received about the same amount of reps. Both look solid.
Lolomana Mikaele was impressive. He has been playing very good football as of late. It is always good to see a freshman come in and contend right away the way that Mikaele has.
Spencer Larsen showed what he can do in blitz coverage. On more than one play, Larsen broke through the offensive line and got into the backfield. With defensive lineman like Holmes needing to be double teamed, it opens up numerous possibilities for defensive coordinator Mark Stoops.
Ricky Elmore and Adrian McCovy both look like they have put on a considerable amount of weight and they are both impressive specimens. Elmore has exceeded every expectation with his performance in fall camp. Both he and McCovy will be interesting to watch in Saturday's scrimmage.
