Sooners excited about gameweek arrival
It's hard to believe, or maybe it's not, but the Oklahoma football team will take the field this Saturday to open the 2006 season. The expectations may be lowered after Rhett Bomar was dismissed from the program following the Big Red Scandal earlier this month.
OU's title hopes may be on life support, but that's why they play the games. With eight starters returning on defense and Adrian Peterson healthy to begin the season, the Sooners are still a formidable challenger to Texas' hopes of repeating as Big 12 champs.
The preseason has been a soap opera. Questions exist at several key positions heading into the season. But after record-breaking heat and a full offseason of workouts and practices, the anticipation is building at the corner of Lindsey and Jenkins.
"I can't wait man," Malcolm Kelly said on Friday. "All through the summer, working and dying out there through the summer. Two-a-days being 100-plus every day, now we're coming to game week and we can just go out there and be in front of fans and just have fun. All the hard work is behind us and now it's just gameplanning and having fun."
Kelly will still have to wait in order to find out if his anticipation is warranted. With a new quarterback and a new offensive line, the offense is a wait-and-see proposition.
