Vandy battling UMass, UNCW and Hoyas for Wattad

With the fall signing period rapidly approaching, the Vanderbilt Commodores need to make quick work if they are to fill the majority of the six available scholarships. So far, Vandy has not gotten a verbal in this class, but that could change very soon.


That's because Johnson City, Tenn., Science Hill's Omar Wattad appears to be close to becoming Coach Stallings' first big fish into the Commodore boat.


Wattad has long been regarded as one of east Tennessee's elite prep basketball players. Standing at 6-foot-6, and 198 pounds, the sleek big guard has played all five positions for the Hill. Last year, Wattad led the Hilltoppers to the Big 9 Conference championship, averaging 20 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.4 assists per game. This past spring, Wattad was named the Kingsport Times-News' 2006 Northeast Player of the Year.
