Bulldogs strengthen offensive line for 2007
Kelly Quinlan
UGASports.com After waiting for 22 days to learn his fate from his second alcohol related arrest in less than a year redshirt freshman center Ian Smith found out his fate from head coach Mark Richt. After practice on Thursday, coach Richt announced his decision about Smith's future with the program.
Coach Richt made his final decision about the fate of Ian Smith suspending the redshirt freshman for six games including the Chick-fil-A Bowl. Smith's first game back for the Bulldogs will be on October 6, against Tennessee.
"We are going to let Ian remain in the program and he has a six game suspension starting this game and then there will be other things that we do," said Richt. "He will have early morning running and some community service, but we will definitely get him on a program that will help him with this issue because this is a serious issue."
Smith will have to attend counseling and meets for his problems with alcohol as well as serving community service.
"Ian is in counseling and the main thing for him is to get help with his issues with alcohol and we had to decide if it is better for him to be here or move on somewhere else," said Richt. "I was thinking about moving him onto GMC for a year and then bringing him back, but we thought our best opportunity to help him with the alcohol situation was to keep him here with us on a daily basis. That is why we decided to let him stay."
