Top Florida junior talks recruiting
Davenport (Fla.) Ridge Community linebacker Vince Williams figures to be one of the most highly-recruited prospects at his position in the Sunshine State for the Class of 2008. He's already picked up one scholarship offer, from Florida, and has interest from multiple other programs.
"The Gators, they are my first," Williams said. "The coach Charlie Strong text messaged my phone, then I called him back and he said they are going to be offering me."
Williams will head to Gainesville for Florida's Junior Day on Feb. 3.
The 6-foot, 206-pound Williams met Strong during a summer camp and enjoyed his time with the Florida assistant head coach/co-defensive coordinator.
"Saw him before at the Friday Night Lights camp. I got the opportunity to sit down and talk to him a little bit. You can tell he is a linebacker and that he knows what he's doing when he coaches that position."
Williams is impressed with the Gators.
"I love their program," he said. They've got everything running now. They have had a couple of winning seasons and then the national championship this year."
Florida isn't the only school that Williams has interest in. Florida State, along with Alabama, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Ohio State, South Carolina and South Florida all have been showing interest in the talented linebacker.
Williams doesn't have a commitment timeframe.
"I don't really know yet. It's all up to me and my parents to make the decision together. When I find where I really want time is not
Williams had 121 tackles (22 for loss), nine sacks and nine forced fumbles on defense. Offensively, he played fullback and tailback and totaled 604 rushing yards and four touchdowns and had one reception for a touchdown.
