NU Notes: Linebackers look to blitz more in 2007
With Nebraska's secondary back at full strength this spring, senior linebacker Corey McKeon said the Blackshirts will be able to do several more things as a defense they weren't able to do last season.
McKeon said the season ending knee injury senior cornerback Zackary Bowman suffered in 2006 forced the linebackers in a situation where they rarely blitzed.
Now with Bowman back in the mix, McKeon said expect the Blackshirts to come more freely on linebacker blitzes because of the number of defensive backs they will have to work with in 2007.
"We blitzed less than half the time we did the year before," McKeon said. "I didn't blitz much very all.
"The more dependable the secondary guys can get, the more different schemes coach Coz can run and different blitzes we can run. Once you can depend on those guys to get the job done, our coaches are going to have no fear in calling anything. It will be a great switch-up for our defense to have our coverage be that solid."
McKeon said another thing he feels the linebackers must do this spring is take ownership of the defense.
McKeon is one of four linebackers that return this season and he feels that they will be the anchor of this year's defense.
"Just the linebackers as a whole, we want to put this team on our shoulders," McKeon said. "We have guys that are vocal, guys that lead by example and guys that lead more orally. We just try to put it on our shoulders and be positive leaders."
