Scrimmage Insider: Johnson joins 1st team
In the battle for playing time at tailback, one thing has become clear during the first 11 days of fall camp - position matters.
Just as no drill has gone by without presumptive No. 1 running back Chauncey Washington receiving the first rep, the players who have more to prove have had more carries. Those with less to prove run early and infrequently.
Sophomore Stafon Johnson has handled the ball often, receiving plenty of praise from coach Pete Carroll as, "A totally different guy."
Thursday night's scrimmage in the Coliseum provided the first tangible sign that Johnson has worked his way - for now - into what surely will be a rotation at tailback.
Washington still received the bulk of the first-team reps, and sophomore C.J. Gable spelled him often. But Johnson was the only other tailback, besides third-down back Desmond Reed, to take a significant number of reps with the first team. He was the primary back in three of the first-team offense's seven series.
