Tech's defense emerging under Ruff
The dread is gone. No longer does one cringe whenever the Tech defense takes the field. Defensive coordinator Ruffin McNeill has seen to that.
For the second straight game since McNeill assumed the reins, the Red Raider defense put on a lights-out performance.
But this one was more impressive. Not only was Tech facing Big 12 as opposed to Southland Conference competition, but the Swarm - yes, I think we can so term them again - essentially pitched a shut-out while the proceedings still had meaning.
Iowa State's only score while the game was even remotely still in doubt came on a field goal late in the second quarter. But even that was the result not of defensive insufficiency, but of a Graham Harrell interception that was returned deep into Tech territory.
That field goal, incidentally, is the exception that proves the rule of Tech's manful new defense.
