A&M working its way back into Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle area of Southeast Texas was once one of the most fertile recruiting grounds for Texas A&M football. Names like Kevin Smith, Mickey Washington, Chris Cole, Leeland McElroy and Calvin Collins are but just a few examples of players from the region who went on to the NFL after their playing days in College Station.
However, the area has been less friendly to the Aggies as of late. Archrival Texas has made their presence known in the region and LSU has been able to convince recruits to cross the border with increasing regularity. However, the tide is beginning to turn back for A&M.
The 2007 recruiting class saw two top prospects from the region sign letters-of-intent with A&M. Billy Chavis of Beaumont West Brook has been one of only three true freshmen to see the field this year. Brandon Williams of Central High in Beaumont was a highly-touted prospect but is still attempting to clear some hurdles before enrolling.
