Georgia Tech lands four-star
One of the top uncommitted offensive line prospects in the South if not the country ended his recruitment on Saturday night. Omeregie Uzzi out of Chamblee, Ga. became a Yellow Jacket on Saturday evening and it would have happened much sooner if not for some extenuating circumstances.
Former Chamblee Head Coach Jim Showfety confirmed on Friday night the commitment by his big offensive lineman.
"He just committed within the last half hour," Showfety said. "He committed to Georgia Tech."
Though Uzzi had long favored Georgia Tech, he took a recent visit to Virginia to give the Cavaliers a shot at his services. After the visit, the Yellow Jackets remained the favorite but Uzzi couldn't commit exactly when he was ready.
"He's such a nice kid that he wanted to make sure that he had a chance to talk to the head coaches of both schools before he committed," Showfety explained. "He would have probably informed both schools on Thursday but he lost his cell phone Thursday morning. We were sitting there the next day or so trying to figure out what we could do. He would not call Georgia Tech until he had a chance to talk to Virginia personally."
Tonight he was finally able to get in touch with the Virginia staff and that was all he needed to give the Georgia Tech staff the good news. The big pickup could be a huge contributor for the run-heavy Yellow Jacket offense.
"I can tell you in our offensive scheme, he's what I call a difference maker," said Uzzi's high school coach. "He was hurt the first part of the year and once he got back in the lineup he gave a whole new dimension to our offensive line. I don't know if Tech will block things exactly the way we do but the concept is similar and I'm very confident he'll be a huge part of their success.
"But he's such a great kid off the field," he continued. "He's a team captain. I think the people at Tech are going to be very happy with the kind of person they're getting."
