Linebackers under new direction
One of the most exciting positions on Pitt's 2008 team is the linebacker position. There's three reasons that make it a position of high interest. One, it returns all three starters from last season. Two, the position is home to a number of talented young players, some that a lot of Panther fans have been anxious to see play. Three, they have a new position coach in Joe Tumpkin, who at just 37, brings 12 seasons of experience coaching the linebacker position.
Tumpkin comes to Pitt from SMU, where he was on Phil Bennett's coaching staff as linebacker coach, for the previous three seasons. Coaching under Bennett as a head coach, and now coaching under Bennett as a coordinator should help Pitt's defense, as far as coaching continuity. With Bennett adjusting to a new team, Tumpkin as linebacker coach, will know exactly what Bennett expects of the linebackers.
