Bucks offer another Florida corner
The offers are starting to pile up for Cape Coral (Fla.) Athlete Jaylen Watkins with the Ohio State Buckeyes and Florida Gators both jumping on board for the 6-foot-1, 172-pounder. Watkins already held double digit offers but was excited to learn that he had picked up two new offers including the one from Ohio State.
"Earlier (on Monday) my coach brought me to his office and told me that Ohio State is going to offer," Watkins said. "(The written) offer isn't here yet but it will probably be here (Tuesday)."
Watkins admitted that he has never been to Ohio before but that Ohio State's reputation alone was enough to get him pumped for the offer from the Buckeyes.
"I was really excited," Watkins said. "I didn't expect an offer from them. I talked with coach (Taver) Johnson twice and my coach said that when they saw the film they really liked it and they wanted to offer so I was happy."
Being listed as an athlete in most databases opens up several opportunities for Watkins to fit in with different programs but the Buckeyes have talked to the rising senior about playing the cornerback position.
"They have talked about me being a tall corner and that is what they like because of Malcolm Jenkins," Watkins said. "They would love to bring me and have me play just as well as him."
With the recent Gator offer coupled with the Seminoles two of the big three in Florida have offered Watkins at this point. But the Buckeyes have made an effort over the past years to recruit the state of Florida and have had some recent success.
"A lot of schools are coming in our state and trying to get talent," Watkins said. "They are not worrying about the big three anymore."
Watkins is unsure about any sort of time table for his recruitment and despite giving it a little thought is not ready to set any sort of deadline.
"I really don't know but I have talked about it with my parents but we haven't decided yet," Watkins said. "I really couldn't tell you if it would go into my season
I will have to take some visits and see."
Does any single school or two stand out from the rest of the offers for Watkins?
"I really don't have a number one right now," Watkins said.
But where does the Ohio State offer put the Buckeyes in the big picture?
"They are in my top four or top five," Watkins said. "I will be looking at them too."
The Buckeyes do hold one card that could play in their favor in the process and while it would not be enough to tip the scales it certainly does not hurt.
"My coach is from Ohio and he worked with Ohio State doing something so I will definitely be looking at them," Watkins said.
