Tide targets JUCO WR
Wide receiver Kenbrell Thompkins didn't receive much attention from college programs when he played at powerhouse Miami Northwestern but since enrolling at El Camino Community College in Torrance, Calif., Thompkins has matured into a 6-foot-3, 190-pound playmaker. Now the junior college star is receiving attention from elite programs on both the West Coast and the East Coast.
"I've had coaches come visit my practices from Florida, Alabama, Tennessee, Oregon and a bunch of others," said Thompkins, who boasts a 4.4-second forty time. "Once I got out here and got access to better resources, I really started to improve. I made a lot of plays for my team last season and they really started to consider me one of their leaders. Getting all this attention from colleges has been great because it just helps my confidence even more."
Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain headed back to familiar territory in California to scout out Thompkins earlier this spring and has since developed a relationship with Thompkins, along with head coach Nick Saban.
"Coach McElwain is a really nice guy. He had a lot of good things to say about me and he said he feels like I'd be able to come in and help out the offense pretty quickly. I'm on pace right now to graduate in December, which I think is also something they see as a positive for me. When I talked to Coach Saban on the phone he said there's definitely a place for me at Alabama. Knowing the kind of guys they recruit, it's good to know that they think that highly of me."
Thompkins has stated publicly that the Florida Gators are likely his top college choice but with the Gators takings things slow with Thompkins, the receiver said has begun to examiner other options.
"I love Florida and I would love to play there but I'm looking at all my options. You want to position yourself with a good program. To me, it's not so much about playing in a system that gets me the ball a lot. I want to play somewhere that I can be a part of a great program where special things happen. That's really what I'm looking for the most."
