Two-way star looking to make a Dent this fall
The courtship between Ole Miss and Greg Dent is still very much in the flirtation phase, but if the Rebels decide to step up their pursuit of the Belle Glade (Glades Central), Fla., wide receiver/defensive back, Dent is more than willing to be receptive.
Dent doesn't have an offer from Ole Miss yet, but he's in no hurry to make a decision. He said he's received some overtures from Ole Miss, and despite knowing very little about the Rebels' program, he's interested in learning more.
"(Ole Miss recruiting coordinator/cornerbacks coach Chris Vaughn) e-mailed me (earlier this week)," Dent said. "He said he was thinking about me."
Dent, who claims offers from Miami and Florida International, said Purdue has indicated that an offer from the Big Ten program is forthcoming. Scholarship offers have been slow in coming for Dent, he said, due to an ankle injury that prevented him from practicing during the spring evaluation period.
However, he has had a strong offseason, one that has pushed him to No. 28 on the FlaVarsity.com top 100. FlaVarsity.com's Michael Langston recently wrote that Dent could see his stock jump even more this fall in the annual Muck Bowl game between Pahokee and Glades Central. Last season, Dent had two touchdowns in Glades Central's win over the Devils.
However, as Langston wrote, Dent's "
biggest calling in college looks to be at safety, where he is a rangy, athletic, explosive game-breaker. The amount of ground Dent covers with his size is truly astonishing. You can really tell (early) in the spring that Dent looks much more comfortable with being the go-to guy for the Raiders on either side of the ball. He's stronger, quicker, and is probably more aggressive in reading the quarterback's eyes."
Dent said he plans to camp at Florida State later this month. The trip to Tallahassee, he said, is the only one he's planning to take this summer. As for a favorite in what could be a compelling race for his signature, Dent said he is "just kind of open. I want to see what kind of offers I get. I'm open to leaving."
