Three-star corner has a change of heart
In the world of recruiting, decisions are made, sometimes hastily that lead to prospects and sometimes even coaches backtracking. For New Orleans (La.) O.P. Walker cornerback Urell Johnson, a big decision was made just over a week ago when he committed to Southern Miss. However, it didn't take long for him to have second thoughts.
"I decommitted last week," Johnson said on Wednesday night. "I just wanted some more time to think about the decision. I wasn't ready and I got caught up in the situation."
Johnson certainly has plenty of options already. The big cornerback holds offers from the likes of Tennessee, Texas Tech, Baylor, Colorado and a host of others. On the heels of his decommitment there are a few schools that stand out to Johnson and Southern Miss is still one of those.
"Texas Tech is one school that stands out right now," he said. "USM is in my top three right now. It's Kansas State, USM and Texas Tech."
In particular, Texas Tech is a program that Johnson has maintained strong communication with and the Kansas State program has built strong inroads into New Orleans and the O.P. Walker program of late.
"I talk to Texas Tech the most," he said. "They really want me up there. I don't talk to Kansas State much but I hear from one of my former teammates that's up there that they're very interested."
Along with his top three, Johnson also has a strong interest in Virginia, Utah, Colorado and Nebraska. He has a few specifics that he is keeping in mind while looking at these schools.
"I'm looking for playing time, graduation rate and great coaching," he said. "I'm planning on visiting all of them this fall."
Now that he has backed out of his initial decision, Johnson doesn't plan on recommitting anywhere soon. Targeting a possible late fall or December commitment.
