Speedy Texan has CSU interest
Michael Walker is known throughout recruiting circles as a man who can run and run fast. The 5-foot-10, 170-pounder is playing linebacker for Brenham (Tex.) High School and using his speed to wreak havoc in opposing backfields while picking up scholarship offers along the way.
But just how fast does Walker run?
"I've had him at 4.27 (seconds in the 40-yard yard dash) and that was handheld," Brenham Coach Galen West said. "I would say he is consistent in the 4.32 area."
Walker laughed when asked if those numbers are legitimate and said they were, pointing out he had several college scouts in attendance when he posted the 4.3's.
That speed has turned into scholarship offers from Walker, who projects to play safety in college. Thus far Walker's list of known scholarship offers includes Colorado State, UTEP, Louisiana Tech and Louisiana-Monroe.
Coach West said Walker played defensive back a year ago until a strong game at linebacker during a playoff run made West decide to make him a full-time linebacker. the result was 145 tackles, six sacks, 37 tackles for loss and one interception.
"I use my speed to get to the ball quick," Walker said of his play on the field. "This year I am playing linebacker, then switching at free safety and captain this year, so I am leading the team. "My game is just hitting. I like hitting the running backs and getting to the ball real quick."
Walker broke down his choices of scholarship schools by saying he likes the program UTEP has built and said the fact they are in Texas is a plus. He also likes the way they do things at Louisiana-Monroe. He talked the most about Louisiana Tech and Colorado State.
"Louisiana Tech writes me a lot of letters and it seems like they care a lot about the players and athletes that go there and about where they stand in all their classes," Walker said. "Colorado State has a good program. I like them and I have a lot of conversations with them, so I like them a lot."
Walker said his recruiting contact at Colorado State is Scott Brown and the two talk about once or twice-a-week.
"He just tells me a lot that I like hearing," Walker said. "He tells me that they like me and they like the way I play.
"What gets me excited is how their program (CSU) is going and how the school is mainly."
Thus far Walker has no visits lined up, but did say he wanted to visit Colorado State and perhaps TCU. He added he has already been to a camp at Texas A&M and is hearing from the Aggies.
Walker, who said he likes to ride horses on the weekend, sports a bench press of 290 pounds and a squat of 435. Academically, he claims a 2.5 grade-point average and will take the ACT in November. Walker said he hopes to own his own business someday and wants to major in business at college.
