Will DE Scruggs visit MSU?
Gregg Scruggs of St. Xavier High School is one of the hottest prospects in the nation for the class of 2008. The 6-foot-5, 230-pound defensive end prospect just finished his season last weekend. Scruggs helped lead St. Xavier to the Division 1 Ohio State Championship and a possibly #1 ranking in the nation.
Scruggs is listed as a two-star recruit in the database, but he has the offers of somebody who deserves to be ranked much higher than that.
SpartanMag.com would be very surprised if Scruggs does not make a nice jump in the rankings when they are updated. Not many recruits can claim offers from strong programs in the Big Ten, ACC, SEC and Big East.
Due to focusing on his team, Scruggs has not been able to focus on recruiting, but all that has changed and now St. Xavier High School has seen a revolving door of coaches stop by. Michigan State Coach Harlon Barnett stopped by as did Ohio State Coach John Peterson. Head coaches like Jim Grobe of Wake Forest and Steve Kragthopre of Louisville have also made the trip to Cincinnati.
Scruggs offer list is impressive. It is already over double-digits and includes the likes of Michigan State, Michigan, Tennessee, Georgia Tech, Wake Forest, Connecticut, North Carolina State and Cincinnati. The only school, that has not offered is the Buckeyes. We asked Scruggs about Michigan State and Ohio State.
"Coach Barnett came down to see me at home," Scruggs said. "He was here the first day he was allowed to be here. I have a good relationship with him. I have also spoken with Coach (Mark) Dantonio several times. Coach Peterson from Ohio State came to see me as well. He keeps in touch on a regular basis."
Whether the Buckeyes decide to offer Scruggs is still a question nobody knows the answer to. Last week the Buckeyes took a commitment from another defensive end prospect, Willie Mobley of Minnesota. Ohio State is apparently holding a few scholarships for recruits like Terelle Pryor and Cordale Scott. If they miss out on them, then a scholarship spot would open up.
"I am good friends with Devier Posey," Scruggs said. "He talks to the Ohio State coaches and keeps me informed on things. We have been friends for a while."
Coach Barnett serves as the primary recruiter of Scruggs for Michigan State. Barnett, who hails from the Queen City, played his prep football at Princeton High School before heading to Michigan State and then the NFL. Coach Barnett has done a good job of recruiting his home town for Coach Dantonio.
Scruggs already has a few official visits set up.
"I will be visiting Tennessee this weekend," he said. "Then I am supposed to go to Wake Forest on Tuesday and Wednesday and then I will go to North Carolina State the next weekend. I am not 100% sure about the mid-week visit. I may move that back to January."
Scruggs stated that he will likely take all 5 of his visits. If Ohio State offers they will almost certainly get one, but schools like Michigan State and Louisville could also be possible destinations. Scruggs has yet to check out Michigan State officially or unofficially, that could be a factor in his decision of where to visit.
"Michigan State wants me to come up there, so I am seriously considering setting up a visit to see what it is like."
The coaching situations at several schools certainly has had an impact on Scruggs' thought process. The fact that Coach Dantonio is stable at Michigan State and has the Spartans on the right track is a positive in their recruitment of him.
Wherever Scruggs ends up, the school that he selects will be getting a solid student and a high character recruit.
SpartanMag.com will be sure to keep in-touch with Scruggs in the coming weeks about his recruitment.
