LB Shuey ready for visits
Earlier in the recruiting process Charlotte (N.C.) South Mecklenburg linebacker Spencer Shuey wanted to verbally commit to Kentucky, his childhood favorite, only to find out the Wildcats didn't have room for him.
Shuey now believes things have worked out for the best, as new opportunities have arisen and more offers could be on the way. The 6-foot-4, 241-pound prospect spoke recently about his future plans and the schools that are involved in his recruitment.
"I'm going to Clemson this weekend for a visit," Shuey said. "Next weekend I'm probably going to Chapel Hill (UNC) or somewhere but I'm not really sure yet. The weekend after that I've set up a visit to Illinois.
"Right now I'm really just keeping my options open. I'm going to rely on those visits for help."
Shuey now holds offers from Illinois and Marshall. More could be on the way soon.
"Clemson told me they're going to offer me when I come up there this weekend. I'm not sure where Chapel Hill stands but I know they're real low on scholarships. Illinois offered me a while back.
"I'm actually waiting to hear from Tennessee. After the Shrine Bowl was the first time I heard from them. They're coming down to see me on Thursday."
While the offer situation and how it develops in the next couple of weeks will largely determine Shuey's future, he already has a pretty good idea of what two schools are sticking out.
"I would probably say Clemson and Illinois are the top two. I'll just see what happens on the visits."
Illinois has been the only school thus far to make the trip for an in-home visit with Shuey.
In his senior season at South Mecklenburg, Shuey rushed for 1,250 yards and 15 touchdowns while recording 88 tackles on defense.
