July 13, 2011For months Sooner fans have been looking into unfamiliar territory to find the answer to their quarterback need in the class of 2012. However, it seems that after receiving a commitment on Wednesday night from San Antonio Reagan four-star signal-caller Trevor Knight they were just looking to the wrong patch of unfamiliar territory.
Undoubtedly San Antonio is far from foreign soil to Sooner recruiting with names like Jacob Gutierrez and Corey Bennett in the past along with current Sooner Travis Lewis and future Sooner Kyle Marrs all among Oklahoma recruits during Bob Stoops' tenure.
However, it's not every day that Oklahoma lands a commitment from a player who grew up wearing burnt orange and had been committed to fellow Big 12 South rival Texas A&M for over four months.
However last week Oklahoma quarterback coach and offensive coordinator Josh Heupel got in touch with the Knight family and asked them to take another look at Norman after last visiting in late January. Knight, joined by his twin brother Connor Knight and their parents made the trek to Norman and spent Saturday and Sunday hanging around Heupel, Bruce Kittle, and much of the rest of the Sooner staff.
Upon returning it seems like the Sooners were just too tough to turn away and on Wednesday evening in spite of a family tragedy the family made it official calling Heupel and making his pledge to the Sooners.
Knight, ever a quiet participant in the recruiting game simply offered the news on Facebook:
"On one of the toughest days of my life with the passing of my grandpa, the light shines through in honor of him and I have committed to play football For the University of Oklahoma! BOOMER SOONER!"
SoonerScoop.com will have much more on this commitment and what exactly it means to Oklahoma's recruiting moving forward.
