UPDATED 6 p.m. ET Thursday: Florida State cornerback Greg Reid was arrested Tuesday night in Lake Park, Ga. for driving with a suspended license, misdemeanor marijuana possession and a seatbelt violation.
According to Georgia State Patrol incident report, which was released to the media on Thursday, Georgia State Patrol officer J.W. Kinsey pulled Reid over at the intersection of Georgia Highway 376 and Highway 7 in Lake Park, Ga., about 12 miles south of Valdosta, Ga. around 8:45 p.m. due to suspected illegal window tint and for not wearing a seat belt.
The officer asked for Reid's license and Reid said he didn't have it on him. Reid showed the officer his FSU ID card and gave his birth date. When the officer pulled up his record, it showed that Reid had his license suspended in Florida due to his failure to pay four traffic tickets.
The report states that during an inventory of the vehicle, the officer could smell a "strong odor of air freshener mixed with burnt marijuana smell." The officer looked in a brown paper bag on the passenger seat and found a zip lock bag with a "green leafy substance" that the officer suspected was marijuana. Also inside the brown bag the officer identified "unrolled, loose cigar tobacco still holding the shape of a cigar."
The officer then observed a brown partially smoked cigar, estimated at 2 1/2 inches long, that also contained the suspected marijuana. It was located on the cup holder ash tray just below the radio, the report states.
The officer said that the substance was field tested and it tested positive for marijuana.
According to the report, Reid told the officer that he was unaware that the marijuana was in his car. When asked, Reid said the last time someone else was in his car was "a couple of days ago."
Reid asked the officer is he could just write a ticket and let him go, but the officer told Reid he was unable to do that. He was booked and released at the Lowndes County Jail.
Reid's window tint also graded above the legal limit when tested, but he was only issued a warning for the illegal tint.
WCTV first reported the arrest on charges of driving with a suspended license and marijuana possession on Wednesday. Reid starred at Lowndes County High School in Valdosta, Ga. and was rated a five-star prospect by Rivals.com.
Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher released a statement on Wednesday afternoon.
"I am aware that Greg has been charged and will gather all the information before I determine what course of action to take," Fisher said.
Reid had his share of off-field troubles in 2011. He was suspended one game for an unspecified violation of team rules and was arrested on charges of perjury in an unofficial proceeding and resisting arrest during an incident with a friend using Reid's scooter. The charges were dropped quickly.
Reid tallied 32 tackles and two interceptions on defense last season and was the team's primary punt return man. He is expected to be a starting cornerback and carry the punt return duties again in 2012.
"Just being mature," Reid said of his goal for the spring when talking to Warchant.com in March. "Just going out and trying to know everything I have to do and just kind of make it just a habit. That's the main thing, just being mature and just whatever I've learned the last couple of years just try to make everything become a habit."
