December 3, 2004Greenbelt (Md.) Eleanor Roosevelt athlete/wide receiver Derrick Williams has decided where he'll be taking his official visit this weekend. So who is the lucky team?
"I'm going to Texas," said the 6-foot-0, 189-pounder. "It was a tough decision and it really came down to Florida State and Texas in the end, but we decided that we can't visit Oklahoma (Dec. 10) without visiting Texas. The process would feel incomplete."
There is still an outside chance that Williams will take an unofficial visit before his decision is announced on Dec. 22, but for now his five officials are all set.
"Tennessee was very impressive last week and the Vol Walk was amazing," he said. "Penn State was just as loud and big a crowd and I've always had a good feeling about their program. Florida was a great visit, but I'm still waiting for them to name a new coach. I have Texas this weekend and Oklahoma on Dec. 10."
One coach could change things when it comes to Williams' recruiting -- and it's not Steve Spurrier.
"I like coach Spurrier, but South Carolina -- it's just kind of late," he said. "I don't really know enough about the program."
Spurrier was scheduled to be in the Williams house late last night, so things could change. However, as of early Thursday evening, Urban Meyer was the coach with the most.
"If he took the job at Florida, obviously that would jump them up in my mind because his offense is very interesting and allows players like me to get a lot of touches," Williams said. "If he took the job at Notre Dame and was interested, I'd look into it as well. Notre Dame has a great tradition and they need speed players. I guess his offense is what interests me."
In the meantime, Williams is off to Texas and will follow that with Oklahoma.
"They are great rivals and we've known Mack Brown for awhile, since the days my brother (Dominique) was recruited by him and all," he said. "My brother kept telling me -- 'Mack Brown, Mack Brown, you gotta visit Mack'. I'm looking forward to it."
