March 19, 2008HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The sky may have been overcast but the attitude was sunny on the Southern Miss campus as the Larry Fedora era officially began with the team's first spring football practice at the Joe P. Park Practice Facility.
"They were eager to get going and show what they can do," said Fedora. "They are proving themselves all over to every one of these coaches and plus it (the system) is new. They are trying to figure out we want in practice and how we want things done. They are out there to please and do the best job they can."
The team took advantage of that opportunity on its first day with beginning the installation of putting things into the system and learning the overall way of going through a Fedora-run practice.
"Hectic," said Fedora on describing his first day as the Golden Eagles' head coach. "Guys were trying to figure where to go and I told them if they don't know where to go to just get there fast. They did a nice job of moving around. They just don't know where to go right now, but they will get it figured out."
Fedora then went on to describe how he runs a typical practice.
"We are going to be hurry up tempo," Fedora added. "We are going to move during practice and we are going to coach on the run. We are going to get on and off that field."
One of the position battles this spring will come at quarterback where the Golden Eagles have four quarterbacks in camp, including redshirt sophomore Martevious Young, who is the only one to have seen game action, redshirt freshman Austin Davis, redshirt senior Todd Wilson and redshirt freshman Randy Hardin.
"I want to make sure they understand the system," said Fedora about his quarterbacks. "They have got to know the system and understand the base plays, both run and pass. They have to be able run the offense. Whoever does that the best and shows that the offense is better when they are on the football field -- that is who will be playing."
Southern Miss returns to practice Thursday afternoon.
