- UCLAa head men's hoop coach Ben Howland, remembering former legendary Bruins' head coach John Wooden, who passed away earlier this year.



Conference play begins at the Creek today in men's hoop as UCLA and Wazzu tip off televised conference coverage at 8PM in Los Angeles.

The updated 2010-11 Director's Cup standings were released and 16-time defending champ Stanford was in second place - 16 points behind current leader North Carolina [the only other school other than Stanford to win the title] - while five Pac-10 teams were in the Top 25.

Meanwhile, at NCAA HQ, the new head of the NCAA's penalty enforcement division warns that penalties will be stronger than they have been in years' past for rules violators.





California

In men's hoop, the Bears defeated Hartford to improve to 7-5 overall.



Washington

In football, junior tight end Chris Izbicki quit the team.



Oregon State

In men's hoop, the Beavers defeated Illinois-Chicago to improve to 5-6 overall.



UCLA

In football, head coach Rick Neuheisel fired defensive coordinator Chuck Bullough and receivers coach Reggie Moore.



WSU

In men's hoop, Wazzu defeated Mississippi State and Baylor but lost to Butler in the Diamond Head Classic title game to move to 10-2 overall.

In women's hoop, the Cougars lost to San Diego State to drop to 2-10 overall.



Arizona State

In women's hoop, senior guard Dymond Simon was named as the conference's player of the week.



Oregon

In women's hoop, the Ducks defeated Santa Clara to improve to 9-2 overall on the year.



USC

In football, junior defensive lineman Jurrell Casey and offensive lineman Tyron Smith both left USC to pursue NFL careers.



Arizona

In men's hoop, the Wildcats defeated Robert Morris to improve to 11-2 overall.



Stanford

In women's hoop, the Cardinal defeated Xavier to improve to 8-2 overall on the year.
