A week after being officially announced as the Seminoles' new head football coach, Willie Taggart has made the first addition to his coaching staff. Florida State officially announced on Thursday that former Miami Central head coach Telly Lockette has been hired to coach tight ends at Florida State.

“I’ve known Coach Lockette for a long time and am excited he is joining our staff at Florida State,” Taggart said. “He was an important part of my first staff at South Florida and has gained Power 5 experience with his last three seasons in the Pac-12. Coach Lockette is a tremendous recruiter and coach who does a phenomenal job developing student-athletes on and off the field. While we were at South Florida he was the primary recruiter for the Miami area and helped us sign a number of impact players, including Quinton Flowers, Khalid McGee and Deatrick Nichols. His expertise will benefit our current and future Seminoles.”

The position of tight ends coach was recently vacated when Tim Brewster accepted a position on Jimbo Fisher's staff at Texas A&M. An earlier report saying Lockette would coach running backs was inaccurate.

“It’s a blessing to have this opportunity to reunite with Coach Taggart and be back in the state of Florida,” Lockette said. “I’ll always be thankful for my time at Oregon State and the opportunity provided to me there. I am elated to be at Florida State University, and I’m looking forward to helping Coach Taggart and our student-athletes however I can.”

Lockette guided Miami Central to two 6A state titles in 2010 and 2012. He was also the offensive coordinator at Miami Northwestern when the Bulls won the state title in 2006. While at Central, he coached both Dalvin Cook, FSU's all-time leading rusher, and former Seminole star Devonta Freeman, the highest payed running back in the NFL.

As a player in college, Lockette played linebacker Idaho State, where he was a two-time Division I-AA All-American. He was inducted into the Idaho State Hall of Fame in 2013.

The 43-year old coached running backs the last two seasons at Oregon State.
