Will FSU get a gift like this in the next 10 years?

Our College of Business hasn't been named. I don't see we couldn't get a similar gift like this in the future. I wonder how much our price tag would be though?

I've heard $10-20M.

No, the price for naming the College is more like $40M.  $10M to $20M buys naming rights on portions of their new building, which is different.  I can't think of any named colleges at FSU (I must be missing some)!

I may have been thinking of the new building, Joe.

Ah, yes, the Dedman School of Hospitality (I forgot about that one).  I may be wrong, but I think that was 6 million which was matched 1-to-1 by the state to create a 12 million endowment.

Those numbers are about right for the Dedman School...although, it may have been 4 and 8. In any case, it is the largest endowment of any FSU department.

Would be very nice to get a few of our colleges named, especially business and law (since they are most likely to have wealthy donors).

Those are the numbers I remember as well.

Generally speaking, every institution develops naming opportunities guides. In addition to providing direction on the naming of facilities, these guides include the minimum donations required to establish new named scholarships, fellowships, professorships, chairs, institutes, centers, etc. Partly because of inflation, they're periodically updated. At most universities naming a building currently runs from about $15 to $25 million. Naming a college usually requires a much larger gift. But, exceptions certainly exist.

I do believe the gift from Bob and Nancy Dedman (back in the late 90s) totaled $7 million. DeVoe & Shirley Moore's planned gift of about $25 million - largely to be administered by the Boosters - ranks among the university's largest though it's worth adding that both the Boosters and Foundation have other large planned gifts on their books. (The Moores have also given several million in cash - see Moore Institute, Moore Eminent Scholar Chair, Moore professorships, etc.) I believe that technically the largest outright gift or pledge in Florida State history was made by Helga Wall-Apelt (about $50 million). But that gift was to Ringling and while I appreciate benefactors supporting the museum, I'm unsure how much Ringling gifts really benefit Florida State.

Back to the OP's point, one of Florida State's challenges has long been securing these huge transformational ($50 million plus) gifts. Most campaign plans include securing some of these larger gifts. Florida State made up for the lack of them in previous campaigns by securing more smaller gifts - by smaller I still mean major (six and seven figure) gifts - than is normally the case. But it will be tough to achieve a billion goal without receiving some of those higher end gifts.

I've linked the COB announcement regarding the Dedman gift.  It looks like the Dedman gift commitment was $7 million in ClubCorp stock.  Upon the sale of ClubCorp to KSL Capital Partners, FSU received about $6.37 million (Jan., 2007) which with matching funds from the state was expected to establish an endowment of about $12.6 million.

Thanks for the link, Joe.

I actually drew the assignment of escorting the Dedmans down on the football field in 1999 (shortly after they made this commitment) so that Bob Dedman could plant the spear.
