There still are basic phones on Sprint, and even a flip phone from Samsung, but they aren't making them with the same quality they did years ago.  Sprint is making their money on selling data plans, so that's where the market has shifted.


If you just want a good quality phone, I'd say your options are:

Android:
Samsung Galaxy S3 - It's not cheap, but it is the best Android phone out there right now IMO (or at least tied with the HTC One X/Evo).  The 16GB version will set you back $200.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus - Excellent authentic Google experience Android device.  Great hardware (pretty comparable to the GS3), although some have complained about battery life.  If you won't be using much data or sync-heavy features, this probably won't really apply to you.  This phone is free if you upgrade online.


iOS:
With the anticipated release of the new iphone next month, the iPhone 4s is now available on Sprint for $150.  It's a good, fast phone and is easy to learn.  Again, if apps and internet really aren't your concern, the iPhone is still a great choice and tends to retain its value very well.  Since the new iPhone is coming out next month, however, I'd expect the price for the 4s to go down to $99 and the new iPhone will be $199.  The iPhone 4 will likely be $5



If you want to stay on a budget, I'd say go with the Galaxy Nexus or an iPhone.  May want to wait a month for the iPhone, regardless if you get a 4s or a 5 (or whatever the hell they end up calling it).

Yeah I saw the flip basic and was just reluctant to go with it in fear
that basic phones will soon be obsolete too, so may as well transition
to new technology now. I still may opt for the samsung flip but I like to stay away from the contract deals when possible. I think I've only been on 2 contracts with Nextel/Sprint in my whole time of service. Thanks for the info, I was leaning towards a Galaxy "something or another" anyway just based on the couple of hours of research I put in today. They seemed to be the upper class phones from what I've been able to find. I haven't researched iphones at all so I may look into them too.

I found out Sprint is allowing Nextel users to upgrade their phones for .99 cents (select phones only) and no contract so I told them to hook me up with the Galaxy SII; it should be here in a few days.

I know, that you know, there are more than one android phone out on the market, right?  Some bad, some good, and some great.  I wouldn't come to that conclusion after owning one phone.  Iphones are definitely made well though and a great phone.

desi, i need to pick up something for my kid and considering his ability to break/lose/water damage phones (all 3 have occurred at the same time...) i was weighing up my options and at this point leaning toward jamming him on the t-mo $30 plan since he spends most of his time surfing and texting anyway and i can have him supplement with viber for voip calls.

best bang for the buck right now (assuming i will have to replace it again) what would be your suggestion? i'm leaning toward a google nexus S since they seem to be relatively cheap and ready to receive JB?

preferably the phone would be able to work on either t-mo or att so i can jump between MVNO's if i need to and stable because he will invariably load it with apps.

We'll see what the next iPhone will bring.  People thought they'd release the iPhone 5 last year, and many (most?) were disappointed in the incremental upgrade.  I'd keep expectations down and hope for the best.

The new iPhone will almost certainly have 4G LTE and a new smaller connector similar to micro USB, but beyond that the rumors are exactly the same as they were last year:  Bigger screen, redesigned exterior, beefier processor.

Nexus S isn't a bad piece for the price.  JB is a huge software improvement over ICS, so I'd say that is a plus.

Are you going to buy the phone on contract?  Or are you looking to buy an unlocked or used phone off contract and do month to month service?

The Nokia Lumia 900 isn't a cheap bad phone, although it's a Windows phone.  Not sure if that isn't "cool" enough for your son.  Should be easy to find used even cheaper than a Nexus S.

Based on what your answer is for where you are buying the phone, I'll broaden my recommendations.

The wildcard for this is my phone isn't eligible for an upgrade until March.  I don't like us on separate timelines, so I need to figure out how I can make this possible.

Lastly, my work is compatible with iPhone, not Droid.  But I really am not interested in getting an iPhone.  I've gotten used to how this works, and I don't want to go back to a smaller screen.  Samsung Galaxy 3 will be the phone I get, just a question of when.

So, I called Verizon just now.  Yesterday, I renewed my wife's contract and upgraded her to an iPhone 4s.  $150 total, and $35/month more to the bill.

I then called the 800 verizon number to ask if they can fiddle with MY upgrade date so that my wife and I would be on the same upgrade schedule and contract.

Essentially, if I wanted I could pay $210 to cancel and $199 for a Galaxy 3 and move to ATT.  Or I could pay $599 to stay with Verizon.  The guy at least sounded like he wasn't going to budge, so I hung up telling him that I was on my way to the ATT store.  He did nothing to stop me.....damn it.

They are pretty nice.  Bart is a big fan.  The only downside with the Lumia 900 is that it's not going to receive updates past 7.5, which may be a deal breaker for some.  Still, it's good hardware, snappy, has a nice screen, and generally gotten good reviews about performance.  If apps are important, it doesn't have the selection that iOS and Android offer.

Off contract, a Galaxy Nexus should be pretty cheap.  Regular Price is $350 directly from Google, and used prices are even lower.  Battery life could be better, but overall it's a great phone and already has Jelly Bean.  Really hard to beat for that price point.

If you go with an Android, I'd say go with a Nexus (S or Galaxy).  The rest will be pricey, even used. The cheaper ones will have sub-par hardware.

You could always get him a cheap iPhone as well.  People will be ditching them left and right in the next month.  Should be able to get a cheap 4 for under $125 used by that point.

As for screen captures, I use the feature quite a bit.  The times where it is handy is capturing phone related information (Battery stats, software version info, IMEI number, etc).  It's also handy to save images from an app you are running.  For instance Instagram does not allow you to save pictures, but I'll screen capture and cropp the image to send it to someone else, if it's something notable. 

You also see people do this a lot with text messages on iPhone, where people will take screen captures of a conversation and post it to FB (usually funny conversations).

It's a handy feature to have.  Android didn't always have it and I had to use rooted apps to accomplish it.  Now, it's a standard feature and a handy one to have at that.

Battery life depends on how you use it and your individual app settings.  Battery life is great on the GS3 if you are sensible (ie not tons of widgets that update every 5 minutes and lots of apps that use push notifications). 

The official Facebook app for Android isn't as well coded as the one for iOS and tends to be a battery drainer.  Mark Zuckerberg has asked that his team use Android phones to help figure out what features need to be focused on with their complete overhaul to come soon.

Camera on the GS3 is fantastic.  I haven't seen an iPhone 5 camera pictures yet, so I cannot compare them. 

What phone do you have now?  If you are already on one of the operating systems and have a good deal of paid apps already, it's probably easier to stay on

also, I vowed I wouldn't jump on the next wp, especially if it were a nokia, just because I was annoyed the 900 will not upgrade to wp8 (supposedly there is a wp7.8 coming out).  BUT this new 920 has my attention.

It's a great handset and has a stunning camera.  I'm not a fan of the Metro UI/Windows 8, but if Nokia ever decided to broaden their horizons and make an comparable handset running Android, I'd definitely consider it.

Have a droid Charge.  battery life is below average (used to it), but now - phone is ~1year old or so - some of the apps, and the phone in general are getting a little 'sticky'.

example words with friends takes a LONG time to open up, load up, etc.  Is there something I can run to clean some of the crap out (if there's crap that's slowing it down).  Or is there something I'm missing?

There are a couple of things you can try.

1.  Download a cache cleaner (like Cache Cleaner + or 1 Tap Cleaner) and see what is taking up uneccesary memory.

2.  Do you ever delete old text messages?  If not, you can use 1 Tap Cleaner or SMS Backup & Restore to delete old text messges. If you'd like to back-up your texts, SMS Backup & Restore can back-up your old texts if you want, then cab delete texts older than _____ (your choice) to save room.

3.  I don't usually recommend task killers, but if the above aren't really helping, you can try  downloading one like Memory Booster - RAM Optimizer.  It should show you how much RAM your system is using, and give you easy and quick options to free up running processes to help your phone run better.

Let me know if any of those work.  If not, there may be an issue with how your phone is set-up.

Thanks.  Just ran the cache cleaner.  And it cleaned 44MB of space.

I reset my text messenger to delete texts when it's over 100 messages (keeps 100, deletes the rest in a thread).  I've restarted my phone and it still hasn't updated (aka deleted) the old threads.  Unsure how to actually get the threads deleted though...

Once that's done, I'll let you know.

Try using the small and free app Delete Old Messages.  I've used it in the past with decent successs.  It allows you to delete texts over a certain age.  To keep only a certain number of your last texts requires the paid version.  Still, it should help you out if you havent' cleared out your texts ever.

Might be a problematic app causing the issues.

Install and it will warn you if there are apps acting up.  If some pop up that you don't use often, uninstall them.  If they are apps you want to keep, force close them when they act up and keep an eye on them.

so i ended up snagging one of the Galaxy S2 deals for my kid from wally world and stuck him on the t-mo $30 prepaid which nets him unlimited txt messaging, 5 gigs of 4g data per month (then unlimited edge after that) and 100 talk minutes (not too worried about this because he doesn't talk that much plus he can hit us up on viber over 4g or wifi)

first things first - holy f'n shiz the damn t-mo 4g (3.5g) is fast in SWFL. i was routinely getting between 16 and 22mbps in speed tests on download. verizon 3g is its biatch.

now the fun stuff - ginger bread sux donkey ballz. I'm not real keen on slamming a JB rom on there for daily use at the moment but i have been looking at a couple of the ICS roms, particularly the jedi knight and clones / drones rom. nice and lightweight and still preserve all the features he will want in stable form.

since i've never rooted an android phone before i presume that i snag CWM and odin to root then once rooted, reset, wipe the phone, reset and install new rom, reset let a sit for a few mins then add his google accounts back in?

I had a GS2 with an ICS Rom and loved it.  I'm on JB right now (not quite ready for prime time yet) and it's spectacular.  CM10 should have RC1 out by the end of the month, I'd imagine.

As for your question, the GS2 on T-Mobile isn't the same as the one for AT&T.  T-mobile's has a Snapdragon processor, while AT&T's has a Exynos (which kicks some serious butt IMHO).  As you know, you will need to be careful to get ROM's that are approved for use on your T-Mobile GS2.

The procedure on my AT&T GS2 was to use ODIN to flash a rooted kernel, then flash a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP).  From there, make a Nandroid backup, then flash new Phone-specific ROM's to your heart's content.

ICS is pretty nice, and a big jump up from GB.  Should keep him tided over for a while.

Eh, take it back and tell them it screwed up during a software update. 

In all honestly, it's really hard to eff up Samsung phones during the rooting/tweaking of ROM's process.  You never really brick them, they are just "soft" bricked, since it has a download mode and can always restore it back to Stock via ODIN.  It's one of the reasons I love Samsung phones.

We'll see what the next iPhone will bring.  People thought they'd release the iPhone 5 last year, and many (most?) were disappointed in the incremental upgrade.  I'd keep expectations down and hope for the best.

The new iPhone will almost certainly have 4G LTE and a new smaller connector similar to micro USB, but beyond that the rumors are exactly the same as they were last year:  Bigger screen, redesigned exterior, beefier processor.

All things equal, I would prefer to get the Samsung over the iPhone. Are there any more Droids to look out for in the same time frame as the release of the iPhone?

Things move fast in the Android world.  Yes, there will be other big releases to go head to head with Apple later this year.  I'd guess more Quadcore devices, bigger batteries, and HD displays, along with 4G LTE will all be staples.  It then comes down to aesthetics, manufactuer, and carrier preferences.

ya i have seen those cases - thinking about getting one for myself actually from when i'm out on my bike.

i really need something that supports the 1700mhz t-mo band as well as the 1900mhz att bands. hence my confusion as to whether to go with t-mo specific nexus s or spend a bit more and get a galaxy nexus or possibly unlock an S2? 

of course spending more has its issues!
