Hey guys, I'm wondering how you get into FSU. What do you have to score. Can anyone take online classes from Florida State?

Assuming you are in high school, a big SAT score (from what I understand) is the first most important thing, followed closely by a good GPA in your core academic classes.

Any Florida resident can take up to 15 (I think) hours of credit as a "special student". After this 15 hours is 'spent', you need to be in a degree seeking program to continue with classes.

FSU puts out a brochure for counselors, it has some good info...

GPA > SAT... SAT is just one test, GPA is all of your tests.../

If your GPA is less than satisfactory, SAT/ACT are the next way to improve that...

If all else fails, claim discrimination...

What's considered a "big SAT" score these days? I know they added a section and now it's out of 2400, but don't a lot of schools still just look at your verbal and math score?

Is 1250 (based just on the verbal and math) considered an average big score? What about 1350? Or does "big score" not start until the 1450 range?

Perhaps I spoke out of turn, as someone here has claimed that GPA in core classes is more important than SAT. There have also been discussions here that, relative to UF, FSU puts more weight on the SAT vs. GPA.

I have no idea the extent to which schools count the analytical section of the SAT. What is reported is the math/verbal score, which could be simply 2/3 of the total score (if the analytical section is weighed accordingly).

So, on the 400-1600 scale, a "big" score where FSU would have a hard time keeping you out no matter what your GPA would be around 1400, I'm guessing. It scales down from there, depending on how strong your GPA is.

Perhaps someone closer to this can chime in and set me straight and/or provide greater detail.

The 80th percentile (a strong score) nationally is about 600 for each area (i.e., 1200 for two sections; 1800 for all three).

The 90th percentile (an exceptional score) nationally is roughly 660 for each section (i.e., 1320 for two sections; 1980 for all three).

Based on the literature linked in a previous post above, in fall 2011 the median 50% admitted to FSU scored 1760 - 1980, roughly the 75th to 90th percentile of all taking the SAT. Impressive.

Looks like the first two lines are about the entire population of students taking the SAT, not just those that apply or are admitted to FSU.

To get into FSU, you want to be either in that median 50% for both SAT and GPA...but if you are below for one, you better be on the high side for the other.

Good info, Joe and Brick. I don't have anyone I know that will find this useful, but I was curious anyway. Thanks.
