So far so Good on my GS3. I have not needed a bigger battery, Yet. It is getting double the battery life that my Galaxy Nexus got when I ran it as 3G all the time. I have been running the Black Jelly rom on it and like it so far.

Nothing quite like never having to worry about battery life, though, in regards to the bigger battery.  I used mine for 3 hours total screen time yesterday and battery was still at 60% when I put it on the charger 15 hours later.  Without the extended battery, that would have been around 20% battery left.

It's not a necessity, but it's a nice option to have.

I was going to buy the bigger battery but got to thinking I am really never away from a charger. So I decided to get a Trident case instead. Figured I am more apt to drop it than run out of battery. So I will deal with it for now and see how it goes. So far the phone is smooth and everything is working good. I have tried several different rom's on it and really have not found the 1 that I like.

Just saw an updated review of the Lumia 920 and the battery performance is sub par.  . 

My 900 battery is adequagte, sometimes lasting > 24 hours of light use.  Other times it seems to drain faster.  Today, for example, I unplugged it at 0500 and have been using it moderately (fb, twitter, ie, email) via works' secured wifi at different break times during the day (stuff's running, gotta wait).  Right now at 3:29, 10.5 hours later, it's at 35%.  Does that seem reasonable?

My stock GS3 (standard battery, unrooted, no tweaks) would be around 60% after 11 hours.  That's about what it'd be at when i'd get home from work after around 11 hours off the charger with moderate use.

Sucks to hear battery life isn't good for the 920.  That doesn't look good for Nokia.  Battery life is becoming more important than other specs these days.  Motorola has shown it can be popular and profitable with their Razr MAXX line.

I left my wifes Samsung Galaxy S2 on for 3 days sitting on the counter. It does not have cell service yet because I can not cancel oour plan with Verizon. But after that time running on wifi it still had around 20% battery. It is funny how much battery drain is caused by the phone radio. Even my Nexus with the phone radio turned off last for 2 days now.

Update..  People are saying it improves with a couple of complete drains and re-charges. 

Our Dan Rubino refers to his 920's battery life as fantastic and I would
have agreed up until today when my 920 barely made it six hours on a
full charge.  Oddly the back of my Lumia 920 became warm during
throughout the morning.  Made for a great hand warmer but I'd trade cold
hands for better battery life any day.

Lastly, adebo offers this,

"I did a complete discharge of the battery yesterday. I waited for
the phone to power off on its own and then I repowered it on and let it
die on its own again. I did a complete recharge to 100% afterwards and
my battery life has improved dramatically. I have had the phone off of
the charger for over 11 hours with moderate use including downloading
apps, games, browser, texting, and phone calls and I am at 53% at the
moment."

That's odd, because fully discharging Li-ion batteries is not usually encouraged.  Neither is charging them to 100% and leaving them plugged in (hence trickle charging, which is what most devices do these days). 

The best way to prolong the life of your batteries is to put them on the charger regularly and try not to leave them plugged in longer than you have to.

Sounds about right.  Typical "deep sleep" (phone in standby, screen off) for the GS3 should be around 2-3% per hour, depending on how many things are syncing. 

With Gmail, work email (Microsoft Exchange Server for email, calendar, and contacts), and Facebook set to push notifications, and Instagram, Dropbox, and a few games syncing, I get around 1.5-2% per hour drain with my extended battery (around 3-4% with a stock battery) in deep sleep.

I take it you are referring to the HTC 8X?  Seems nice, comparable to the Nokia 920 and Samsung Ativ, both of which run Windows Phone 8.

I like WP8 as a platform.  We haven't gotten to see too much hands-on for the upcoming high-end WP8 devices, so I can't really say too much about them beyond the fact that they seem to be getting good reviews early on.

I am running LiquidSmooth rom on my and like it. It takes all of the Samsung bloatware off the phone. I have ran Black Jelly and HighOnAndroid. I just got the GS3 on GSM. I am dropping Verizon and switching to Solavei. It is $49 a month for unlimited everything and no contracts. The bad thing is losing the VZW coverage but by switching it is going to save us $170 a month on cell phone service. I have been playing around with the GS3 since I got it. So far I like it. It is not much different than my GNex. I have it rooted and running custom ROM's.

Nice job on the monthly savings!  It's always nice to get out of your contract and not have to worry about lugging around a high monthly bill.

I'd say the screen, expandable memory, and accessories are nice.  I have a 4,200 mAh extended battery on mine, which I got for $12 on Amazon.  Phone easily lasts 2-3 days with tons of apps, all notifications on, etc.  Love it.

If I were going contract-free, I'd personally probably look at a Nexus 4, as the price point is excellent and it's a great piece of hardware.  Not having LTE isn't that important to me, as we won't be getting it in Tallahasee for a while regardless.  I could live without the expandable memory as well.

oh, I LOVE having expandable memory.  Had 40gb on my Focus.  i'm starting to think about the ATIV-S instead of the Lumia 920. 

I'm kind of a data packrat, like to have a movie or two and some tv shows downloaded from TiVo, etc. 

Having said that, I've become a LOT more likely to use the skydrive, facebook folders, etc (cloud services) instead of saving pictures on the phone.

I thought about the Nexus 4 but got a Good deal from a friend on a used GS3 for $350 so I went with that. I am not concerned about LTE either I am on wifi a lot. I can elive without the exp memory also but I will add 32 gigs to the S3 soon just to be safe on room. How thick is the 4200 mAh battery? Are you able to have a case on with that battery? Which battery did you get?

For the wife I picked up a GS2 AT&T brand. Already have it rooted and it is running ICS until I put a JB rom on it.

The battery is literally double the size so the phone goes from around 0.37" thick to 0.50" thick.  They sell extended battery cases.  I got one on Amazon for $5 and it fits great.  It has a honeycomb design and has a great feel to it, easier to grip than a stock GS3.

There are deals on Amazon for a battery + case for $13 I believe.  I bought the Anker battery.

That's the one I should have gotten.  I got suckered by the 1 year warranty from the Anker battery (no NFC either).  The Hyperion only had a 3 month warranty, but it's got a longer battery life AND NFC. 

When I got my battery, it was on sale for $9.99 and the Hyperion was $15.99.  I bought my buddy the Hyperion one and a case and had it shipped to him after he switched from an iPhone 4 to the GS3.  He loves it.  Never has to worry about battery life again.


As far as expandable memory goes, it's very convenient.  I have a lot of movies, pictures, and music loaded on my 32GB card and use the internal 16GB for apps alone.  I take a LOT of pictures with my phone, and use the Auto back-up function from Drop Box to update via Wifi to ensure I save them.

NFC is mostly a gimmick for now, but it's starting to pick up steam.  I saw NFC payment spots at the airport this past week.  Now that I have a Nexus 7, having NFC would have been nice.  I'll prob bite the bullet and get a new NFC capable Extended Battery for my phone at some point.  Until then, I'd have to use the old stock battery to use NFC, which isn't practical.

HTC, Samsung, and now LG all have Nexus devices. It's not a manufacturing exclusive, any manufacturer that follows Google's Nexus program requirements can file to be a Nexus device. It usually has price, hardware, and unlocked carrier requirements. Android fans have been hoping for a Sony Nexus device.

I had seen the commercial before but just took it as an AT&T commercial with a Lumia, but not necessarily a Lumia 920 commercial.  The 900 was always blue in the promos and the 920 is usually yellow.  Had the phone been yellow, that would be a little bit more obvious.

I can't believe Nokia and AT&T are taking this long to release the 920.

I had seen the commercial before but just took it as an AT&T commercial with a Lumia, but not necessarily a Lumia 920 commercial.  The 900 was always blue in the promos and the 920 is usually yellow.  Had the phone been yellow, that would be a little bit more obvious.

I can't believe Nokia and AT&T are taking this long to release the 920.

you are right about the colors.  you will only be able to get the blue 920 through we orders.

supposedly it's coming out 11/4. I'm surprised there's so little promo.  The att web site does have a nice display related wp, though.

I'm looking forward to tinkering with an NL920 as soon as they are released. 

On a somewhat related topic, on my flight back from Charlotte Thursday, I sat next to a guy who had been eying my phone and Nexus 7.  Once we landed, he asked me what phone and tablet I had.  He had an older Windows phone and was looking forward to getting the Samsung Windows phone.  I asked him if he'd seen the Lumia and he said he wasn't really interested in it, for whatever reason.

He was on his way back from an automotive trade show in Vegas and had just gotten a Surface RT tablet.  He said he really liked it, but that it was a little big and tough to use in small spaces.  He didn't use it on the plane at all, but let me try it out on the little tray area.  You can't really use the touch cover in an airplane.  It is handy to have the little kick stand.  The colors are vibrant on the screen and I didn't really notice that the resolution was no where near as dense as my Nexus 7.  The tablet was a little heavier and thicker than I was expecting it to be.  It's a good quality build, but does feel a little clunky.

Could be he wants to be able to add memory or change out the battery if needed.  These are the two things I really wish Nokia would allow. 

 

Talked to a guy at the att store today and he said the blue (cyan) would be available in store.  Said the 920 is a couple of weeks away.

There's an app for that.  Check out AudioManager.  There should be a few others as well.

Well, the Ativ seems to be simply the galaxy 3 with win 8 instead of Android.   I am considering the HTC because I like my wife's One-x.   11/9 2:32 PM | IP: Logged
