Work is getting rid of the Blackberry server so I am being forced to go the way of the touch screen. I'm not happy about it but they're paying for it. So what do you think? I don't do much on my phone so I don't need a lot of bells & whistles. Text, email, look up scores, lines and directions and check in for flights. I'm told it has to be a droid or iPhone. What do I get?

I'm no expert and I'm a pretty basic user, but I LOVE my iPhone.

For what you do, I would say iPhone. However, Droid does have a MUCH better navigation with turn-by-turn directions. So if you are leaning between the two and want to rely on your phone for a navigation device more than a few times a month, I would go with the Droid.

As of THIS moment, I'd say the IPhone with the improved camera, screen resolution and voice recognition, but by next week who knows? It's smaller than the Droid and isn't as fast so there are pros and cons to both. I have a Droid x and love it, it comes with the free gps/nav, the voice command works great with it. I also love the camera with the zoom and macro feature. People can't believe the photos I post on Facebook are from a phone.

If you don't need bells and whistles, get a cheap iPhone. An iPhone 4 will be more than enough for your needs.

1 vote for the iPhone. I have the old bastard, the 3gs, and I love it. Can't wait until I can upgrade to the 4s.

That is a good point. Google's Android Maps and Navigation works off line as well, so you can cache your directions and they will work even without data signal (handy in remote areas).

There are some apps that do that for iphone, but they aren't free and by all accounts no where as good as Google's.

I was reading last night about this very topic, it looks like Apple might team up with Bing (Microsoft's search) and ditch Google products like Maps all together. Right now, Maps is the default program used for most navigation and location-based apps for iOS. That will likely be changing.

I love my droid phone and my iPad. I really don't see much of a difference between the 2, but I don't use the phone for much other than web surfing and texting. I can tell you that the iPhones I have used are super fast though!

Ive been going over this for awhile now. If the Iphone was as big as the Droid it would be a no brainer. I just got my insurance to replkace my DroidX and I will stay with that until I have a clear decision. Ive even looked at the Samsung Nexus

my wp7.5 phone uses Bing for maps and it works pretty darn well. I've never used a droid or iphone for navigation. I'm surprised the windows phone isn't an option. works great with our outlook server.

I should ask what provider you are on or will be on? Also, what phone are you coming from.

If you'd like to stay with the BBery style of keyboard, there are Android phones that have the same form factor.

Overall, though, if someone else is footing the bill I'd go with an iPhone or a high-end Android phone. Both will do what you want, it'll come down to what you prefer.

I've used both products and my preference is for the Android. I find the operating system easy to use and it has capabilities the iPhone doesn't.

WP7.5 (Mango) is a nice operating system, but the interface takes some getting used to. iOS and Android share a similar layout that makes it somewhat easy to go back and forth between.

The biggest knock on WP devices is the lack of apps. What apps they do have tend to be high quality, though. I wouldn't knock it. I have a few family members that have them and love them.

My definition of basic use would include web surfing and data use. From my perspective, a basic user would find 4G capability and the ability to use Flash as somewhat to very important. Many "basic users" stream a ton of data through their phones and having a 4G connection coupled with Flash capability would make that process a lot smoother. Those are two capabilities the iPhone currently does not offer.

The Samsung Galaxy is extremely lightweight and has the large screen. I played around with one at the Sprint store and it's amazing how light they are. The Super Amoled display ain't too shabby either.

I have a droid LG Optimus V from Virgin Mobile. It's $129 from Target $35 a month.

I routinely use the Google Maps and Navigation 5-6 times a month. I've also got Pandora running as well. Plugged into the head unit in my truck it's prefect for traveling Pandora gives me tunes while Google Nav cuts in at the right time for directions.

There ya go Daniel. If you surf the web a lot or if your company's website (or a lot of websites) you visit have have flash, then an Android may be better. I've only run into about 2-3 sites that I've needed to view and couldn't (view everything on the site), but I would imagine there are a few more out there.

I think the iPhone is smaller than most Android offerings (Desi may know of some Android devices that are smaller though). Tradeoff is screen size, but you're used to that with a BB.

FWIW, MotionX GPS Drive is cheap and works very, very well on the iPhone.

If you need flash, it's a no brainer. Go Look at the Samsung Epic Touch 4G (Galaxy S2 for Sprint).

It's a thin, light device, great display and it has flash. I have the AT&T version and love it. Battery life a great, the device is fast, and sleek. Although the screen is an inch bigger than the iPhone (4.5" vs 3.5"), the dimensions of the phone overall aren't that huge.

Go check one out in the store.

Thanks everyone. I don't go to many websites on my phone. Pretty much limited to ESPN, Warchant, bet a few games and some travel sites like airlines and hotels. Although I may steam some Pandora or Sirius more often with one of these phones. I'm gonna hit up the Sprint store and Best Buy this weekend.

I must say that I'm surprised that the iPhone can't handle Flash. Seems like a pretty basic feature these days.

I just gave up droid for iphone4s. Basically same reason, work only supported bb so I had two phones. Now they support iPhone so I consolidated. It's only been a week but I find the iPhone to be more reliable. It's easy to use and nice and compact. The droid system has a ton more customization but if you do not need it then iPhone is great. Best camera I have seen on a phone. Whatever you do, stay as far away from sprint has humanly possible. They absolutely suck

I've been using Sprint for a LONG time and I don't have any issues with them at all. The price is right and the coverage is good. The only other carrier I would consider is Verizon.

A lot of companies seem to be doing away with BB servers these days. My company got rid of the BB server early last fall. Apparently they cost a pretty penny each month to maintain.

Go with the iphone. Even though you are not a heavy app user, I've found the app quality and quantity to be far superior in almost every facet. Other than that, you can buy a GPS app that will be better than a standalone GPS, sync is seamless and easy, need for flash is maybe a few times a year (yes you can still access copious amounts of porn) and they have a browser app that addresses that anyhow. Battery life is generally better. So you give up a miniscule bit of screen room, tethering perhaps (unless you jailbreak) but really no big deal. Build quality is better, too.

Don't need to buy a GPS App if going with iphone or Droid.
Waze is free, detailed, and completely interactive.

FTR, I have a Samsung Exhibit II (Droid)and love it. I've read it's a basic smart phone, but it is beyond basic (at least to me). It does everything I could want.

I really wish we can keep all these cell phone threads pinned.

The argument for iPhone vs. Android seems just like the argument of Coke vs. Pepsi.

There are advantages and disadvantages of each.

I am an android user.

iPhones does not allow you to view flash, has a much smaller screen, is non-customizable, has you locked into iTunes, you cannot add or replace your memory, you cannot replace your battery, the vast majority of apps are for a fee vs. android, and no 4G on iPhone currently.

I've tried WAZE a little in the past. While a nice concept, it doesn't always given reliable routes or ideal results.

I just downloaded it on my phone and asked it for directions to Summerbrooke Golf Course right now from my house. It gave me 3 route options, all of which take me on I-10. All options are around 18 miles and take an estimated 40 minutes. Primary route with Google Navigation calculated 12 miles from my house and estimated 29 minutes.

While it may work for a free option, it isn't up to par with Google Navigation in my experience.

I was with Sprint for 9 years when I switched in October. Other than slow 3G speeds (Around 0.3Mbps average), I didn't have issues with them. Call quality was good, as was customer service.

I switched to save money and join up with my sister's Family plan. Ended up saving us about $90 a month, as she got a 25% discount for working at the Apple store.

Coverage will vary based on where you live, but overall they are an economical national mobile service. Hopefully they do a better job rolling out LTE than they did with WiMax.

I'll give Google Nav a try.

But I do LOVE the way Waze tells you where Cops, Heavy Traffic, and Accidents are vs. simply telling you where to go.

It's definitely nice. Google Nav shows you where traffic is as well. It also re-routes on the fly and does a good job. You can select your route by different options (i.e shortest distance, shortest time, no tolls, etc).

Waze seems like it's got a lot of promise. If I were a betting man, I'd guess they got bought out by Google, Microsoft, or Apple. Apple would make a lot of sense, as that's what they did with Siri. Buying Waze would give them an option to have a build-in navigation app.

Might be referring to Dolphin? My girlfriend uses it on her iPad because she finds it a lot more user friendly than Safari.

Pretty sure Skyfire is the main "Flash" browser for iOS. Unless they changed something, I'm pretty sure Dolphin doesn't do flash for iOS. It basically bounces the pages to an external server and returns the rendered site to your device.

It's also not free ($2.99).

Looks like there's another one called Photon Browser ($4.99) for iOS.

I've used Skyfire, didn't really like it at all. Still, if your options are limited it might be ok.

Wanted to comment on the Flash. Apple (Steve Jobs decision, I believe) made a strategic decision to not let Flash on the iPhone. It's not that the phone can't "handle" Flash, it's that he decided to try to force mobile web away from Flash.

Since then, despite Droid's ability to use Flash, Adobe has announced that there will be no new versions of Mobile Flash. I'm not sure how long they are supporting updates to the Flash versions currently on mobile devices (they may have stopped already, I don't know) and push for Flash on mobile devices to be entirely stand-alone apps. They want the web to move towards HTML5.

Have you ever known anyone leaving their iPhone for a Droid, and then tell you how happy they are about their decision??

Have you ever heard of anyone leaving Droid and getting and iPhone, and then tell you how happy they are about their decision?

I had a droid for 2 years. Got an iPhone 6 months ago...I am extremely happy about my decision and will not go back to Droid. And I was moderately happy with my Droid.

I know 4 people now who had an iPhone, got a Droid, and returned the Droid within a week to go back to an iPhone.

I'm telling you man, get an iPhone...why, cause it's way better at functioning with the things that you actually care about most. It won't ever put you a bad mode for not working properly either. Do it...iPhone, bacardi coke....do it!

This!!!

I had a droid x for over a year. I hated that phone. It was awful I got an iPhone in December and have yet to have a problem. It works, like it should, every time. It's well built. I'll have no problem getting this thing to last, 2 3, years or more. Good luck even getting a year out of a droid.

I'd rather go to prison than go back to using a droid.

iPhone 4S has a phenomenal camera. The best of any. My older kids have them.

On the other hand, I just purchased the RAZR Maxx for a work phone. There was a learning curve, and there are a few things I liked better on my three year old BB, but there would be some things I liked on BB better than Apple to.

Reasons for Razr Maxx
1) 4G LTE data speeds, particular important when I am tethering at kids sports practices etc. iPhone doesn't offer that. What's funny is that my son showed me his iphone today and it said "4G" on it. I did a quick search and saw that Apple only changed the signal indicator to 4G just today, to coincide with the release of the new iPad. The actual data speeds are no faster and they are not LTE.

2) Apps to tether (connect my laptop to the internet via my cell phone) and turn my cell phone into a mobile hotspot (PDAnet) for only the cost of the app. You will need to jailbreak your iPhone to do this, which is not a big deal I hear, but then you have given up one of your arguments against the Android OS.

3) Bigger screen. I was worried that the 4.3" screen would be too big, but I love it now. The Samsung Nexus on Verizon has an HD screen, but I had other concerns about that phone.

4) Call Quality. A phone is the number one purpose of my device. Call quality is great, speaker phone is great. It's easy to switch to speaker, mute, conference in others etc. I get a signal in my building at work where I had none with my BB. My friends tell me that they used to have a difficult time hearing me. I've had the phone about 10 days and I have taken maybe seven pictures, zero videos and played no games.

5) Large Battery - Double the size of the RAZR.

What I don't like is the massive disclaimer whenever I want to download an apps that basically says I will give up everything, but I expect Apple is no different.
