still going strong.  no real change in weight over the last month but a significant change in body comp.  Gaining significant strength in all major lifts.  MetCon condition is showing great gains...

4/2 8:31 PM | IP: Logged I'm up from 218 to 231 eating 15% more than my maintenance caloric need. doing 5/3/1 4 days a week. I'm down a full pant size and all of my shirts are fitting much better across my chest and shoulders. All of my big lifts have gone up significantly, (60 lbs on bench press and 70 lbs on squat). I'm going to stick with what I'm doing for as long as possible and once I hit a point where I'm not completing my required lifts I'll restart 5/3/1 and start a cut with around 2300 calories a day

Finished at 274, down from 296 for the first 90 day cycle.

Started 2nd 90 day cycle Monday.  Doing my own weights 3 days a week but doing the P90X cardio disks on the 3 cardio days...plyometrics and kenpo already this week.

Goal is to go really hard at it this 90 days with the exercise so I can get my goal of another 25 pounds and get to 249.

Would really like to get in the 240-245 range and then have a plan to keep it there in that weight range.

The first picture is me around April 15th. As my story above says, I started at the very end of Dec but i forgot to take a starting picture.



The second picture is from around July 20th. I put in a lot of hardwork and felt like I was seeing some results slowly until i injured my shoulder at the end of August.

Its day 80 suckers...

Vacation in Savannah in conjunction with St Pattys Day killed the diet a bit but I'm still happy with my results.  Going to be around 25 pounds down by the end, halfway to my goal of 50.

While doing Body for Life, I was only doing the stationary/elliptical for my 3 cardio days.  I broke out the p90 DVDs and did plyometrics yesterday.  After doing lower workout Monday, I thought I was going to die today.

Going to switch to the P90 cardios for my cardio days, hope that will get me over the 50 pounds hump by the end of my next 90 day cycle.

My goal all along was to be between 240-250 by July 4th.

You should focus a bit more on your delts and lats imo. Start those heavy compound movements. :)

I started my journey last year. I was 5'10 155 lbs when I started(I called myself skinny fat though). I decided to change everything in 2012. For the year, I did not eat a sweet, chip, fried only maybe 3 times, no sodas.. yadda yadda. I went from 155 to 142 in 30 days as I added in working out(5 times a week, M-T and SAT). I slowly built back up to ~152. Eating loads of food but the right foods at the right points of the day. Everything was going fantastic until I tore my labrum(270 degree tear) doing a cross fit exercise known as a muscle up. I had surgery in December and I am on the road to recovery. My diet had eased up some this year but over the last 2 weeks I have tightened it back up as I have been going to the gym again.

I think 60% of your body is diet and the other 40% is the gym/cardio. To maximize your gains, you need to be as close to 100% as possible and leaving out either diet or gym/cardo will set you up for a bit of failure as you won't see the results you are wanting.

Slacking posting the last week cause work has been mad.  Doing body for life I cheated a bit and had been doing Friday night and Saturday.  Trying to be more realistic with this and make it where its sustainable for good.  Nothing crazy all day Saturday (eating healthy), just a nice dinner and a few cocktails on Fri and Sat nights.

With that plan, I would spike up 5-6 pounds (mostly from water weight I'm sure) and then slowly take that off and the few pounds I would lose for the week.

Got to a point a week ago where I didn't end back up above 285 when I started the week.  Hit 275 this morning with 2 more days to weigh in this week before my weekly weigh in on Friday.  Really really hoping I can hit 270 Friday morning.

When I started I said I was going to do 2 90 day cycles but me and the wife both agreed this is a permanent change.  Obviously on vacations and special events there will be splurging to do but eating healthy Sunday through Friday afternoon has been very easy for both of us and still having dinners on Friday and Saturday to look forward to.

She is down 15 pounds as well which is awesome and the physical change is more worth it than the weight loss.  Huge difference in my clothes, added a 2nd notch to my belt since I started this week as well.

So I weighed in this morning at 210. Down a total of 14 lbs and my clothes are starting to fit much loser. I have been doubling up on the cardio going to spin class 5 times a week and weight traing 5 days. Funny thing is, I seem to lose more weight when I don't go to the gym on my two days off. I don't think that's a coincedence either. I know your body needs that time to grow and recover but I'm trying to find that happy medium where I push myself but get plenty of rest.

Any suggestions? Tarpon, Orland?

Do you have any idea what your daily caloric needs are? Find this out, (along with protein, carb, fat breakdown), and if you start eating at a deficit you shouldn't have to do so much cardio.
It takes some initial leg work, but once you do this it gives you a great starting point, and you'll lose weight naturally.

I'm doing a modified body for life except not eating six meals a day. I usally eat about 4-5 times. I eat when I'm hungry, not because I have to. I have no earthly idea how many calories I take in. It would probably help to know that. I will research but how do you eat at a deficit unless you are eating rabbit food all day?

TSN is correct about caloric intake? Do you weigh yourself before or after working out. You loose a ton of water during a hard workout so that may have some affect.

Body weight fluctuates daily for a variety of reasons. I wouldn't put too much emphasis on daily changes and focus more on the overall trend.

How long are your spin classes and lifting sessions? If you're going all-out for two hours every day, that might be a little much.

I usually weigh myself after my workouts before I jump in the shower. I know thats probably not ideal but the trends are going in the right direction.

My spin classes last an hour and my workouts are usually about 40 minutes with little rest in between sets. My weight training workouts are more like cardio. I lift medium weight with a focus on more reps. I don't care for the weight training workouts in the BFL sprogram so I usually hit each muscle group at least once a week.

On a positive note I have been doing a lot of cardio (treadmill 1 hour four days a week) and have really cut down on drinking and smoking.  I feel 1,000% better than I felt January first just from the cardio and the reduction of booze and cigs but I can't lose any weight.  I guess I need to get on a strict diet or something.  Do you have any recommendations? (note: I'm the taller, uglier guy)

I saw an infomercial on this program this morning and was thinking of giving it a try.   What do you think?

we bought a George Foreman...marinade 5-6 chicken breasts, and 5-6 turkey burgers on Sundays..then grill them up that night.  The Foreman holds the moistness in so they are good all week.

There are tons of diet plans...as a guy who llikes to eat..I love Body For Life.  5-6 meals a day, eat every 2 1/2 hours.

Wheat bun with a little ketsup and mustard and a burger, voila, a meal
chicken breast and one of those 90 second rice bags, another meal
piece of steak and a piece of fruit...
you throw 2 vegetables in with 2 of the 6 meals each day


portions are fist sized so you don't go hungry.  basic principle is that you eat smaller portions than the normal way we are taught to eat 3 big meals a day.  Your metabolism is working all day, vice where if you eat a big meal and then go 5-6 hours, your body stores more of it as fat.

Also, doesn't have to be huge weights..but you need to add in some weight training (will kick the metabolism in as well).

Take the time to break down everything you're eating to see how many calories you're consuming on a daily basis, and what they're comprised of: protein, carbs, fat, sugar. Then reduce said consumption by 500 or so cals. You're going to have to do the leg work to see what the reduction in carbs are etc. And it may end up more than 500 too as you're endomorphic.
Start lifting weights and you can cut the cardio by a few days. This way you'll build muscle, and lose weight the correct way ala Helmut.

What type of lower body work are you doing? I've had to lay off squats and deads since tweaking my back so I'm focusing on walking leg lunges (with and without kettlebells), wallsits, medicine ball throws and machines (curls/extensions/calf raises).

Have you always had a tight midsection? I was considerably overweight through my late teens and cannot develop a tight midsection no matter what I do.

Orland- start doing kettlebell swings regularly. I'll try to dig up the article but it is one of the best mid-section and lower body exercises out there. Google or YouTube the movement and make sure you are throwing with your hips and not your arms. It's a great workout

Heavy squats, leg presses, walking lunges with 50#'s, good mornings, hypers, leg extensions, standing leg curls. I'll add dead lifts when I'm healed from BA surgery. I hit legs twice a week on a split.
My midsection has always been tight due to my diet. You need to look at eating a calorie deficit diet, and weigh your food. Sounds like a pain, but it's a great way to track macro calorie intake.

There's no such thing as "target weight loss" so doing a million crunches and cardio without a calorie deficit diet is pretty much pointless. There's an app call myfitnesspal that aids in tracking calories. Good luck. :)

Agreed on "target weight loss." One of the biggest misconceptions about training. Also, once you gain fat cells, there's no losing them; they only get larger and smaller. I think that's why former fatties like me get fat more easily.

"Heavy" is a relative term. I squat to 5-6 rep max, so about 170# for me give or take a few pounds. I'll throw in a one rep max too. It's different for everybody.

My life has presented me some pretty large challenges as of late. Church, family, and this program have help me get through it. While my diet was ok in January, my workouts were crap. I know I came up with this idea and I am pissed at myself that I'm a little behind schedule. I am determined to finish strong. With that said, my clothes are starting to get really loose and I have noticed a major difference in body. The weight doesn't quite tell the whole story.

As of right now: I'm 213 down 11 lbs, I have a feeling I'll end up about 5 lbs. short of my goal. I'm not giving up though and have made many positive changes to my lifestyle. Keep grinding everyone!

Change that mindset to "I have a feeling I'll end up about 3 weeks short of my goal."

Even if there was a finite time limit to the LR challenge, keep going when it's done and reach your weight goal!
