The argument for iPhone vs. Android seems just like the argument of Coke vs. Pepsi.

There are advantages and disadvantages of each.

I am an android user.

iPhones does not allow you to view flash, has a much smaller screen, is non-customizable, has you locked into iTunes, you cannot add or replace your memory, you cannot replace your battery, the vast majority of apps are for a fee vs. android, and no 4G on iPhone currently.

I've used both products and my preference is for the Android. I find the operating system easy to use and it has capabilities the iPhone doesn't.

My definition of basic use would include web surfing and data use. From my perspective, a basic user would find 4G capability and the ability to use Flash as somewhat to very important. Many "basic users" stream a ton of data through their phones and having a 4G connection coupled with Flash capability would make that process a lot smoother. Those are two capabilities the iPhone currently does not offer.

There ya go Daniel. If you surf the web a lot or if your company's website (or a lot of websites) you visit have have flash, then an Android may be better. I've only run into about 2-3 sites that I've needed to view and couldn't (view everything on the site), but I would imagine there are a few more out there.

I think the iPhone is smaller than most Android offerings (Desi may know of some Android devices that are smaller though). Tradeoff is screen size, but you're used to that with a BB.

Although I may steam some Pandora or Sirius more often with one of these phones. I'm gonna hit up the Sprint store and Best Buy this weekend.

Wanted to comment on the Flash. Apple (Steve Jobs decision, I believe) made a strategic decision to not let Flash on the iPhone. It's not that the phone can't "handle" Flash, it's that he decided to try to force mobile web away from Flash.

Since then, despite Droid's ability to use Flash, Adobe has announced that there will be no new versions of Mobile Flash. I'm not sure how long they are supporting updates to the Flash versions currently on mobile devices (they may have stopped already, I don't know) and push for Flash on mobile devices to be entirely stand-alone apps. They want the web to move towards HTML5.

If you need flash, it's a no brainer. Go Look at the Samsung Epic Touch 4G (Galaxy S2 for Sprint).

It's a thin, light device, great display and it has flash. I have the AT&T version and love it. Battery life a great, the device is fast, and sleek. Although the screen is an inch bigger than the iPhone (4.5" vs 3.5"), the dimensions of the phone overall aren't that huge.

Go check one out in the store.

Pretty sure Skyfire is the main "Flash" browser for iOS. Unless they changed something, I'm pretty sure Dolphin doesn't do flash for iOS. It basically bounces the pages to an external server and returns the rendered site to your device.

It's also not free ($2.99).


Looks like there's another one called Photon Browser ($4.99) for iOS.

I've used Skyfire, didn't really like it at all. Still, if your options are limited it might be ok.

Don't need to buy a GPS App if going with iphone or Droid.
Waze is free, detailed, and completely interactive.

FTR, I have a Samsung Exhibit II (Droid)and love it. I've read it's a basic smart phone, but it is beyond basic (at least to me). It does everything I could want.

I've tried WAZE a little in the past. While a nice concept, it doesn't always given reliable routes or ideal results.

I just downloaded it on my phone and asked it for directions to Summerbrooke Golf Course right now from my house. It gave me 3 route options, all of which take me on I-10. All options are around 18 miles and take an estimated 40 minutes. Primary route with Google Navigation calculated 12 miles from my house and estimated 29 minutes.

While it may work for a free option, it isn't up to par with Google Navigation in my experience.

It's definitely nice. Google Nav shows you where traffic is as well. It also re-routes on the fly and does a good job. You can select your route by different options (i.e shortest distance, shortest time, no tolls, etc).

Waze seems like it's got a lot of promise. If I were a betting man, I'd guess they got bought out by Google, Microsoft, or Apple. Apple would make a lot of sense, as that's what they did with Siri. Buying Waze would give them an option to have a build-in navigation app.

Did something similar for me, Desi. From downtown to my home off Miccosukee. Had me going down Tennessee, then turning left on Magnolia (past Miccosukee), through some neighborhood off Centerville only to pop back out on Miccosukee. Weird/dumb.

I just gave up droid for iphone4s. Basically same reason, work only supported bb so I had two phones. Now they support iPhone so I consolidated. It's only been a week but I find the iPhone to be more reliable. It's easy to use and nice and compact. The droid system has a ton more customization but if you do not need it then iPhone is great. Best camera I have seen on a phone. Whatever you do, stay as far away from sprint has humanly possible. They absolutely suck

I've been using Sprint for a LONG time and I don't have any issues with them at all. The price is right and the coverage is good. The only other carrier I would consider is Verizon.

A lot of companies seem to be doing away with BB servers these days. My company got rid of the BB server early last fall. Apparently they cost a pretty penny each month to maintain.

I have been a droid user for about 3 yrs now. I am using the Galaxy Nexus(Rooted running Tranquil Ice 8.0) on Verizon. I LOVE THIS PHONE. It has a large screen. So many more choice than the iphone. But it is like coke vs. pepsi. I am not a apple guy it is just to plain jane for me. Plus I like larger screened phones. Heck I would love to have the Samsung Note. Google Nav is a big Plus for me. The new updates of google maps lets you see the busy areas. I also use Waze. I never use it for nav thou. Google voice commands are faster than the iphone we just dont have Siri to talk to us. Being able to have flash is a big one. I also you skyfire as my browser and that saves on bandwidth usage.

N4Dog, if you want a Siri equivalent for Android, download SpeakToItAssistant.  You can program it to open when you hold the search button and it works great.  My wife has a 4S so we'll compare results from Siri and STIA and STIA wins quite a bit.

You can also customize the voice and appearance of the assistant, which is nice.

I can let my Gnex sit on my night stand and not use it and it will have 70% after 10 hrs. Now using it is a different story. The battery will go down in a hurry

Depends on what it is.  Have you figured out what the main battery drain (largest % of partial wake lock) is?  If so, let me know what it is, I may be able to help with it.

In general, once you find out what's giving you problems, there are a few things you can do.

1.  Uninstall the app

2.  Open the app and adjust the settings.  Usually apps that sync data or use GPS are problematic.  They usually also have settings to switch to manual sync.

3.  Do some research on the app and see if there are any app-specific things others have done to alleviate potential problems.

It's good to support the developer.  Otherwise, Google "XDA Betterbatterystats" and find the offical XDA thread for it from the developer.  He has the app (apk file) free on the 2nd post of that thread.

NYGA, Gettin a Galaxy S3 on At&T. I like the HTC One X, but not having a micro SD card slot was a deal breaker for me.

Tex, some have started rolling out in the past couple months. Every manufacturer is rolling out on their own schedule. Unless you are rooted and know how to flash ROMs yourself, you will have to wait. I had an ICS ROM on my GS2 since February and loved it. Made losing my phone hurt that much more.

ICS is pretty good. Seems to have performance and battery life updates, but the major overhaul in the UI. apps look great on both Phones and Tablets, which is nice. I'm running it on my tablet and it's nice. Looks more similar to Honeycomb than Gingerbread.

It's nice, but not critical.

This is the one area iOS has a big jump on Android:  easy and uniform updates across all carriers.  Why Google is letting the carriers dick around with updates is beyond me.  I keep hoping they'll put their foot down, but they don't.  The alternative is to get a Nexus device directly from Google, but that isn't always practical.

Thinking about going to AT&T since they offer us 22% emp. disc. I am down to HTC or Samsang Galaxy III. Now I hear I should wait for Verizon's share data plans. I will get 4 lines with unlimited voice & text for around the same price as AT&T($225). Which phone should I target with Verizon? Verizon also offers us 20% emp. disc. We don't use large amount of data.

We are currently with AT&T.  We have 4 lines (well 5 lines now, as I got my new phone tonight, an HTC One X as a temporary phone) and our monthly bill is $203 after taxes with 4 lines and 2GB Data plans on each (all smart phones) and a 20% discount.

I was with Sprint for about 9 years when I finally left.  Service has been a big improvement.  No dropped calls, data speed is so much faster, and our bill is actually cheaper as part of this family plan.

Verizon is going to be a little pricier.  The share data plan only works if you don't use much data.  If that's the case, that one is fine.  I am not a fan of this style of billing, though, but there are some benefits:  free hotspot ability without rooting or jailbreaking and unlimited calling and messaging.

As for phones, all HTC One X variants are amazing.  The Galaxy S3 matches it in nearly every category, except maybe the screen.  Some have said the HTC One X is the best screen out there.  I have it sitting next to my wife's iPhone 4s and my temporary iPhone 4 and it puts them to shame in brightness and crispness.  Absolutely gorgeous.

The Galaxy S3 will also have a bigger battery and is expandable via Micro USB.

Here's a helpful tip:  If you are on the fence about the device, Costco offers a 90 day exchange policy, no questions asked.  I used this last year (got an Infuse a few weeks before the Galaxy S3 came out so I didn't have to start a new month with Sprint).  I plan on exchanging my shiny new HTC One X for a GS3, IF I find that the battery life and limited internal memory are just too much to bear.

I'd recommend going this route if you are on the fence.  This will allow you to test out your devices, regardless of which you pick.  If you aren't a Costco Member, you can still buy online via their Online store.  You don't need to be a member to use the site.  The problem with that option, though, is you won't be able to exchange in store (you have to be a member to access the store) and you'd have to ship it back to exchange.

they are paying you $75 for Evos?  You can get more than that selling them on Craigslist ... although it may not be worth the effort to you, depending on the condition on the condition of the devices.  Heck, Bav on here (moderator) may want to buy one off you, as he broke his screen and is currently using my old HTC Hero right now.

As for the breakdown, we currently have the 700 minutes w/ roll over plan for $48, then $30 for family texting plan (better value for more lines).  Each person pays $20 for data, and $9.99 for each line addition. 

That comes out to $48 + $30 + 4x($20 + $10) = $198.  The 20% discount pretty much covers tax and additional fees, so our total comes out to be $203 when it's all said and done.  My wife's and my portion comes out to be $60, which is less than half of what we were paying for Sprint.

I'm almost sure I'm done with Sprint. been with them for over 10 years now. They called me today and offered me $159 credit plus $65 each for my Evos. However, they would not give me a 20% discount on entire plan. The 20% is only for the $129 two lines. Nothing off the next two lines or their $40 4G fees. 4G fee is now called the Smartphone fee. I guess I will be paying $100 ETF for two of my lines at the end of the month. My monthly bill with Sprint is $216 with emp. discount of 20%.
