No offense meant, but not being technology literate is a slap in the face of great developer whether is apps, web apps, or wholesale systems/applications.

It should be "user friendly" and not require advanced knowledge to extract the performance as intended.

One thing the tyrant (Steve Jobs) absolutely nail was user friendly doesn't matter if it's iPhone, iPod, or Macs. There are all "user friendly".

I was a long time iPhone user (since the original) but got tired of being tied to iTunes. Jumped to the Galaxy SII Skyrocket and could not be happier.

if you're set on getting the GS3, then check out the price at the mobile shop in Costco to see if you can get any info on a price break. You'll still have a 90 day return period for a price match or otherwise from the day you buy your phone. Be sure you're aware of any requirements that may require.

not set on an S3, but am set on getting rid of the Charge.  It blows.

I may go with an S3 with a 90-day, only if they'll price match when the cost lowers.  If they don't, I'll just wait it out.  I am a Costco member, and will take advantage of it.

I've used this return feature a couple of times, most recently last year when I swapped out my HTC One X for a GS3.  what they do is return the phone cost at the old price and then you re-buy it at the new price.  My phone was originally $249, then the GS3 was $199.  They returned the $249 and sold me the GS3 for $199.  Same goes for price drops.

What's nice is I believe they give you another phone bundle (car charger, cases, screen protector, etc) when you do the exchange, as they are automatically in the bag that they put your phone in.

As always, be sure to check with your store to confirm their policies.  Apparently it can vary from store to store regarding the mobile sales, as they are just a kiosk and not part of Costco.

Nope, you don't have to lose your saved game data.  Download Carbon Backup. 

There are two versions:  Free and paid ($5).  The free version will let you back-up your apps and data (included messages) to your memory card or computer.  The $5 version will let you backup your data to a cloud server (Dropbox, Box.com, or Google Drive).

This type of backup service used to be only for those with root access (rooted devices), but this app works beautifully, is simple to use and has lots of features.  It's nice that you can do a quick backup (data only) and not backup the actual app. 

What will happen when you get your new phone is:

1. Backup your app data (and apps if you wish) to your SD card or computer (SD card is probably easier).
2. Remove SD card and put into new device, or copy back-up files over from your computer to your new phone.
3. Go through initial setup with phone, then open Google Play and download and install Carbon Backup.
4. Open Carbon Back-up and then select RESTORE AND SYNC, then select where your backup is (i.e. External SD card, USB Storage, Cloud, etc).
5. The apps you chose to restore will be installed on your new phone and the data will be restored.

Note:  If you select "DATA ONLY" on your back-up (smaller backup overall), it will automatically re-download the apps you select AND restore your data from the back-up you previously created.

You can also do a bigger back-up, which actually backs up the apps themselves AND data.  The restore is faster, but the backup is much larger file size wise.  If you don't have that many apps (ie less than 50), it's probably not that big of a deal, but if you have tons of games it's probably a bigger deal.

This is also a handy app to have if you have multiple Android devices and want to share saved game data wirelessly between them.  This would require the paid app, but you can sync your games so all devices are up to date (I do this with my phone and tablet).

Google play says that Carbon is not compatible with the Charge.  I downloaded Carbon to my laptop, but the program (Carbon) isn't recognizing my phone.

Went to download the drivers for the phone (Carbon site says to do so), and I already have the drivers downloaded on my laptop.

Not sure there's anything else I can do.

My Charge is 2 years old, running on Gingerbread (I think).  This thing is OLD....

Ah, that's the hangup I guess.  It requires Android 4.0 or greater.  The jump to Android 4.0 took care of a lot of the hassel of backing up your phone (the OS now backs up your data wirelessly as an option you can enable/disable).  Unfortunately, you aren't able to capitalize on that at the moment.

As for Angry Birds backup, I'd check out one of these apps and see if they dump the saved game data files to your phone, which you can transfer over to your computer or SD card.

After about a week of having the Samsung Galaxy 3, here's a little bit of feedback from someone NOT as savvy as Desi....

In daytime/brightness, the phone screen, even on high power is not very bright.  Disappointing
The camera and video is very high quality
The battery life is average, and to me a major disappointment.  Today, I unplugged at 7:15 or so, had wifi and bluetooth off for most of the day, screen was on at least 75% power, with about 35% of that on high power.  The screen was not turned on THAT much.  By 5:25, I had 13% left.  No major apps or games running.  Only Tweetcaster, and 1Weather, haven't done much else.  Was actually on the phone for MAYBE 5 minutes total.
I love the large screen.

May go back to Costco and get a Motorola Razr Maxx HD, once I do a bit more research.  That battery life is completely unacceptable for me with the S3.  That's barely better than my Charge, and that sucked badly.

Some of these results absolutely may be operator error (battery life), so please understand that too.

Sounds like RazrMaxx HD is a better fit for you.  That phone needs no special settings to get long battery life.

My GS3 usually has around 50% battery life when I finally put the phone on the charger at the end of the night (around 15 hours off the charger).  Looking at my phone right now, it's been off the charger for 8 hours and I'm at 75%.  I'd consider myself a power user as well, with 2 email accounts syncing, Facebook and Instagram, weather, and about 150 apps installed.  Also now have LTE here in Tallahassee, which increases battery drain.

Just as a side note, you can go to your SETTINGS -> BATTERY and see what is consuming your battery.  You can then click on the graph and it will show you when your screen was on and your phone was awake (ie consuming battery). 

I'd be willing to bet there's an app that is running and syncing or backing up your data in the background, which is common when you get new phones.

And when you click on SCREEN, how many hours/minutes does it say your screen was on?  My screen shows only 17% and has been on 52m 29 sec so far today. 

Generally, a GS4 will last about 4 hours with the screen on (probably less if on full brightness).  I generally leave my screen on Auto Brightness, as this is the best setting for low battery consumption.


I'm not sure you really want to go through all the effort of figuring out what's consuming the battery at an irregular rate on your device.  If you do, however, the next step I recommend you take is downloading the free app BetterBatteryStats, which will display more comprehensive information about what is consuming your battery at a glance.

Download BetteryBatteryStats app free here: 

Note:  You will want to enable installing 3rd party apps on your phone before you can download and install the app above.  To do this, go to SETTINGS ->SECURITY and then check the box that says UNKNOWN SOURCES, which allows you to install from sources other than Google Play store.

Generally BBS needs to be installed for a few hours before it starts recording data.  If you install it tonight, but tomorrow it should be giving you info that you can check.

Here's what my app is displaying right now.  Deep sleep should typically be above 70%, unless you're using you are actively using your phone a lot.  If your AWAKE time is considerably higher than your SCREEN ON TIME, then it's time to check your Partial Wakelocks (Click the pulldown where it says "other" and select "partial wakelocks").  Mine is high because I as listening to music for about an hour today, which kept my phone from entering deep sleep.

Finally at my laptop.  I've been in Power Save Mode for the last 24 hours.  My screen brightness is about 70% power.  Earlier today it was at 100% for a few hours.

To the questions specifically...
- when I press on screen on the battery button, it says "Time on...1h 33m 21s"
- Warchant app = 8%, CPU total 16m 9s
- Tweetcast app = 7%, CPU total 12m 14s, stay awake 3m27s

One app not listed is Sporttacular.  Wondering if that, along with push notification on email, is causing this.

I will use AutoBrightness for a bit and will download the apps you posted.  I'm VERY interested in figuring out what is causing this...You're a MUCH more power-user than I am and get much more batter power.  So, that means I either have a bad phone or I'm making errors on my end.
