My GS3 just sitting off of charge for 10+ hrs without me touching it only looses 20% of battery.

Sounds about right.  Typical "deep sleep" (phone in standby, screen off) for the GS3 should be around 2-3% per hour, depending on how many things are syncing.

With Gmail, work email (Microsoft Exchange Server for email, calendar, and contacts), and Facebook set to push notifications, and Instagram, Dropbox, and a few games syncing, I get around 1.5-2% per hour drain with my extended battery (around 3-4% with a stock battery) in deep sleep.

That is good to hear. Now if I could just figure out how to move my apps to my SD card to save space on my phone.

Thank you for the feedback. I went to Verizon and checked out the phones. My main issue is the size of the Android phones. They are freaking huge! It is insane. I guess I will get used to it?

I have no choice, I have to get an Android phone.

I have narrowed it down to order of preference to:

1- Razr HD: decent price, decent size, decent features.
2- HTC DNA: CNET seems to like it. The guy at Verizon showed it to me and it is monstrous.
3- Razr Maxx: a little expensive. I can settle on the Razr HD.
4- S3: everyone else likes it but it feels "cheap."

I'd like to see how the Droid DNA does with battery life in its retail form. The battery criticism is really the only knock on the phone right now, and the reviews were pretty mixed on that.

Those Verizon phones were discussed in this thread:

http://floridastate.rivals.com/showmsg.asp?highlight=maxx&sid=1061&fid=1083&tid=153759855&mid=160042073

As for the GS3 feeling "cheap":  Most people put their phones in cases, so that's about all you typically end up seeing and feeling.

As for the phones being big, you definitely get accustomed to it.  I don't think I could go back to having a phone with a screen size under 4.3" anymore.  The extra real estate is very nice for gaming and watching movies.
11/20 9:08 PM | IP: Logged
I will never go back to a phone smaller than 4.5" The phone was charged for 1 hour this morning and has been on since yesterday and I am at 21% battery. I have been using off and on.So I really like it with my new rom. The GS3 does not feel cheap to me.I did put mine in a Trident case.

One of my friends has the Razr M.  Looks nice and he has no complaints coming over from a BBerry.  Battery life is pretty decent, but the screen is sub-par compared to the current higher resolution screens out there right now.

They are pretty nice.  Bart is a big fan.  The only downside with the Lumia 900 is that it's not going to receive updates past 7.5, which may be a deal breaker for some.  Still, it's good hardware, snappy, has a nice screen, and generally gotten good reviews about performance.  If apps are important, it doesn't have the selection that iOS and Android offer.

The main apps that WP marketplace (soon to be called "store") is missing are things like "draw this" and "word with friends."  All the standard fb, twitter, linkedin, amazon, netflix (was on wp FIRST), shazam, angry birds 1, fruit ninja, etc are available.  The list grows every day.  How many people do you know that develop in the MS environment?  They are all potential app writers.

apparently, one of the biggest requests people have on the wpcentral forums is the ability to capture screen shots.  Why is this so important?

The apps will come when user base grows.  Android started out with meager app selection, but now app selection is terrific.  WP's problem will be user base.  App developers have to commit funds to support updates, which in reality is probably easier to do that keeping up with all the Android variations out there.  Still, comes down to the numbers.  Hopefully WP improves over time.  It really is a good Mobile OS.

As for screen captures, I use the feature quite a bit.  The times where it is handy is capturing phone related information (Battery stats, software version info, IMEI number, etc).  It's also handy to save images from an app you are running.  For instance Instagram does not allow you to save pictures, but I'll screen capture and cropp the image to send it to someone else, if it's something notable.

You also see people do this a lot with text messages on iPhone, where people will take screen captures of a conversation and post it to FB (usually funny conversations).

It's a handy feature to have.  Android didn't always have it and I had to use rooted apps to accomplish it.  Now, it's a standard feature and a handy one to have at that.
OK, here is the guide for new WP users switching from iphone or android.  As of now, 46 of the top 50 apps are now available for WP8.  Note, some of these are exclusive to Nokia phones.

"The Windows Phone Store now has
over 120,000 apps ranging from photo apps to those that help you stay in touch
with friends across the globe. Simply put, there are apps for all uses and all
Lumia owners.

In fact, of the top 50 apps available for iPhone and Android, 46 of them are
available for your Nokia Lumia.

If you're considering a
switch to Nokia Lumia (or just bought one), you might be wondering what apps are
available that match up with your old phone. Well, App #Switch is here to show you
the way.

The site, created by Xyo, is available now and serves a simple purpose: it
allows Android and iPhone owners to select their current phone and current
country and type in their favorite app. Then, the site gives suggestions on
replacement apps for the source application, complete with QR Codes for easy
install on your new Nokia Lumia."

Yep, kinda sad as I used to be a fan of MS (Windows, WM6.1, Xbox 360), but damn they make it hard to root for them even when not considering their business practices. I think XBOX is the final straw for me. Windows will probably be the last MS product I continue to support.

The thing I don't like about Windows Phone is how it's locked down. Since the OS is not open source, you're really tied to official updates for continued support of your mobile device. It's a nice OS for sure, but damn is it taking them a long time to gain any traction on market share.

I was all about Xbox until getting it replaced 3 times, my hard drive failing, and now the thing randomly shuts off so I never use it. The rising cost of XBL is the nail in the coffin for me. I've spent over $250 over the years on my XBL subscription. I won't be renewing again.

Question:  If the phone is off, and someone sends a text message to you, is there a way to fix the time stamp so that it shows when the text was sent to you rather than showing it was received when the phone is powered on?  My old phone used to show the time it was sent to me, but these smartphones give it a received time of when you turn on the phone.  Always been a nuisance to me.  Have no way of knowing if it was sent several hours ago, or just a few mins ago.

I use GoSMS and when I press and hold on a message, it tells me when it was received and sent.  I just tested it. Powered off my phone, then sent a text to myself via computer.  Waited 5 minutes then turned the phone back on.  time stamp received said 3:05, but Time Sent said 2:59, which is the time I sent it.

Kind of a pain, but the information is embedded in the text message itself.

I'd guess on planes, trips, or entering buildings/facilities where it's required.  Or times when you're out of service.

And how are they doing in market share in the US?  They do fine and dandy on their home turf, but looking at Nokia on the NYSE for their 5 yr trend and they are WAY down.

Nokie was the king of the hill for many years and even when the iPhone was picking up steam, many overseas still preferred Nokia to the new fangled iOS and Android devices.

Windows Phone is holding Nokia back, at least in the US.  Nokia is about to cut around 10,000 jobs globally, so their stocks are probably due for a slight dip.  http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2013/01/17/tech-stocks-thursday-intel-nokia/1841839/

I don't really care about earnings, stock prices, etc.  I do care about market share, operating systems, and availability on carriers.  Nokia is taking a very calculated risk by aligning with Microsoft.  Maybe they don't want to bite the hand that feeds by spreading to both WP and Android.  I do know that Elop has opened his big mouth and said a lot of negative things about Android that has pissed off a lot of Android fans.  I'd personally like to see him swallow his pride, eat his words and adopt Android as a sidekick to their WP devices.  HTC and Samsung are doing this, no need to stay OS exclusive.  My main point being imagine how well they would be doing if they made their impressive mobile devices available on Android.  They would be a huge player again Globally to take on Samsung and Apple.

http://seekingalpha.com/article/1113171-is-nokia-back

The juicy part:

If achieved, this performance would be a sharp improvement above the prior quarter, when Nokia only sold 2.9 million Lumia phones. Technology pundits now highlight the Lumia - Windows platform as a viable third option beneath the Apple iOS - Google Android duopoly.

At $4.60, Nokia shares effectively trade as a call option. Nokia executives will employ financial engineering strategies to float the note and prop up shareholder value, until real market penetration with Windows phones can be sustained. Nokia's latest settlement award from Research in Motion proves that this company can extract value from its patent portfolio.

In Nokia's latest quarterly report for period ended September 30, the company claimed $7.6 billion in goodwill and other intangible assets. In addition to this intellectual property, the Nokia balance sheet also includes $11.1 billion in cash and securities above $21 billion worth of liabilities. To date, Nokia executives have managed cash flow effectively through sweeping layoffs, debt refinancing, and the consolidation of real estate. Over the next year, Nokia can save another $1 billion, if it were to eliminate its dividend.

On the income statement, Nokia's losses are primarily the result of a collapse in smartphone sales. Before its most recent positive Lumia announcement, Nokia was reporting a 56% decline in year-over-year smart devices net sales. For now, aggressive investors must be willing to take a gamble that the Nokia Windows phone will outlast the Blackberry 10, while also staving off the inevitable release of the Apple iPhone 6.

sorry, you were the one that said "hemorrhaging"  which speaks directly to income, stock prices and other stuff you don't care about, but then proceeded to paste in mass quantities.

Nokia has a low share in the US, but they are going to own the emerging nations as inexpensive handsets are replaced with smartphones.  I see stories every day about a new lower priced lumia (ex: 610) being picked up by a carrier in China, India, etc.  It's only a matter of time.

As for the MS/Nokia partnership, problems with Luma phones have been mostly hardware not OS software.  If anything I think Nokia is holding WP back instead of the other way around.  aside: I've been waiting 4 months for a Samsung ATIV S, announced in late August, but apparently never coming.     One story I read about that speculated that the carriers don't want Samsung to become too dominant, having leading handsets on multiple OS's.

You can homorrage anything, including market share.  It's just a matter of perspective.  Most tend to think financially, but again, that isn't my main concern.  How much money the company makes doesn't concern me, beyond limitations in R&D and the quality of their products.

Carriers are a huge headache in the US.  The rest of the world is way ahead of us in that respect.  Other than AT&T, they handcuff every other vendor.  I hope there's some truth to the rumors that Google is looking to create their own mobile service in the future to circumvent the mobile limitations we have stateside.

It probably has to do with how Earthlink handles its junk mail.  I don't have an account with them, so I cannot say for sure, but it seems like the e-mail might get moved to the junkmail folder online after they've already made it to her main inbox.

Is she using Outlook or a program to access e-mail, or is she accessing it via Online portal (website)?  She may need to check her span settings via her online access to see how they handle spam mail.
