This subject always frustrates me.

As we get older, we are less and less technology literate. No longer are we expected to understand how our computers, phones, and devices work, we just expect them to function an an easy, standard, and digestible way.

There is a droid phone that will out perform an iphone on ANY quantifiable measure, with the exception of app support and maybe battery life. There are droids that outperform iphones in Camera, Video, screen size, data speeds, etc. They just may be more finicky and/or difficult.

It's like computers. People don't know what they are doing with windows, it gets overloaded with crap, and suddenly, it's "terrible" compared to apple. Well of course it looks that way.

If you want the best of something (In terms of quantifiable measures), then go for the droid. If you want something easy to understand that everyone else has, go for the iphone.

I had a droid for 2 years. Got an iPhone 6 months ago...I am extremely happy about my decision and will not go back to Droid. And I was moderately happy with my Droid.

I know 4 people now who had an iPhone, got a Droid, and returned the Droid within a week to go back to an iPhone.

I'm telling you man, get an iPhone...why, cause it's way better at functioning with the things that you actually care about most. It won't ever put you a bad mode for not working properly either. Do it...iPhone, bacardi coke....do it!

I know people who have gone in both directions: hated their iPhone/loved their Droid and vice versa. In the end, I think it comes down to personal preference and how comfortable you are with technology.

My preference for Droid might be because that is what I started out with. We have iPhones on our work accounts and I've become very familiar with iOS. I'm simply just not a fan. I use 4G on my personal phone almost constantly so that's probably part of what drives my preference. I don't find the Droid operating system to be tough to maneuver at all.

Maybe it's too simple of an observation but the former Droid owners I hear the most gripes from had a Motorola. Both Droids I've had were/are HTC phones. The only reason I gave up my first HTC (EVO 4G) was because I was eligible for an upgrade to the EVO 3D and I've been extremely happy with my HTC phones.

No offense meant, but not being technology literate is a slap in the face of great developer whether is apps, web apps, or wholesale systems/applications.

It should be "user friendly" and not require advanced knowledge to extract the performance as intended.

One thing the tyrant (Steve Jobs) absolutely nail was user friendly doesn't matter if it's iPhone, iPod, or Macs. There are all "user friendly".

I was a long time iPhone user (since the original) but got tired of being tied to iTunes. Jumped to the Galaxy SII Skyrocket and could not be happier.

I've used Apple products for years. I've owned pretty much every iPod that was created. I have a drawer full of them. I was pretty close to being that guy that puts Apple stickers on his car.

A few years ago I got the original Droid, only because we had Verizon at the office and the Verizon iPhone was only a myth at that time. I was definitely NOT happy with the Droid. The android os was fairly new at that time and it didn't have any of the consumer features that iTunes offered. But slowly I began to appreciate the features that android did have (widgets, turn by turn navigation, voice search, notification bar, folders, multi-tasking, wireless syncing, OTA updates). Granted iOS has added some of those features now, but it didn't have it then.

Now the android system has grown tremendously. Granted most apps are still made for the iPhone and then ported to android. But android has most of the same apps as the iPhone. Plus the android market (now Google Play) offers most of those same consumer options (movies, books, music, and of course apps) that iTunes offers. And I can browse their market from my office computer (or any computer for that matter), make a purchase, and send it to my phone. I still don't think you can do that with iTunes. Or I can use Amazon.com to do the same thing.

My kids use Apple products and love them. I've used my daughter's iPhone 4S and my son's iPod touch. Both are very cool. But I've realized that I now like the android system better. I love the larger screen on my new Droid; not having to flick through pages of apps to get what I want; having widgets that give me updates on the homescreen; and the overall customization that allows me to make my phone different than everyone else's phone.

Both Android and the iPhone are great options. But the choice for anyone comes down to personal preference.

And by the way, the reason I have a drawer full of iPods is that none of them worked anymore. I had to keep buying new iPods because each one would crap out after a couple of years. I was so blinded by my allegiance to Apple to notice that their products have flaws just like every other gadget. After all, nearly all tech products now are made in the same Chinese factory.

I was actually told by an Apple Genius at the Apple store (after my iPod Photo died), that the iPods are designed to only last a few years. Which as a consumer is very disappointing to hear.

Valid point. Although I have used a couple of different versions of the iPhone, I have not owned an iPhone. However, I have owned an iPod Touch, which is very similar (less the obvious phone features) and uses the same iOS.

I understand the features of an iPhone. I simply prefer Android. It took me some time to break away from Apple, but Droid phones are my preference now.

Here are my experiences with both phones...

iPhone - I got an iPhone 3G back in the day and I freakin' LOVED that phone! It replaced an old flip-phone that I had so just finally having a smart phone was awesome. I had the 3G for a little over two years... The problems started with iOS 4. I don't think they should have ever released it for the 3G - the phone was completely inadequate for it. Slowed WAY down and became just incredibly frustrating to use. I would try and send a text message and just start typing while the screen/keyboard was frozen. Halfway through the message, the phone would "catch up." ohwell Finally I had enough and decided to make the switch to Android - and Verizon.

Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate - I really dug the phone for the first few months that I had it. The screen was amazing and it was SO much faster than my old iPhone! Verizon and Samsung really dragged their feet on the Android 2.2 (Froyo) update, which ticked me off because when I got the phone, the Verizon rep told me the release was "imminent." Right... I wanted my mobile Flash, damn it! More on that later...

As more time went on, I put more and more apps and games on the Fascinate. And this thing started slowing WAY down. It was annoying and starting to become even less responsive than my old iPhone. I decided I needed to start fresh. I downloaded a custom ROM that automatically rooted the phone and cleared out all the Verizon bloatware. That's what I've been using for almost a year now and for the most part, it's been good. I love having the phone rooted and using the wireless tether!

But there are some problems... I would say that at least once a week, I need to completely reboot the phone because it's frozen. And I mean COMPLETELY reboot - taking the battery out and everything. It's annoying. I've also been on a call that's suddenly gone dead - I look at the screen and it says "phone.app has crashed." Um... Really? In the meantime I've gotten an iPad and it's pretty amazing how good iOS 4/5 is with enough processing power.

There are pros and cons to each, but I'll be getting an iPhone 4S in a couple weeks. My company is switching from BlackBerry since we now offer iOS apps and we'll need to demo them to potential customers. Work is paying for it so my Android phone is going bye bye. I'll miss some parts (like the wireless tether - definitely have to look into jailbreaking) but I'm looking forward to a more stable phone experience.

My wife has an Iphone 4 and I have the Galaxy S2. Much bigger and better screen and easier to navigate. Yes, that is what she said.

Her touch screen for messaging is a bit nicer than mine but I like mine a whole bunch better and only have had it for a couple of weeks and still learning things on it.

My money is on droid.
3/12 10:43 AM | IP: Logged
I still have the original motorola droid and it's still functioning very well (over 2 years old). They are smart enough to stop updating the OS so the phone doesn't cripple itself because of the lack of power.

I'm looking to upgrade now and will go droid again. The iphone is fine but it lacks some serious features that the droid has... like the back button. I find the iphone frustrating only having the home button. The iphone also has very few free apps. I have paid for exactly 2 apps. A mantis app for work (3 bucks) and a marine navigation app (10 bucks, and it provides $300 worth of functionality). Every other app I have is free and many are not on the apple store (like an app I love, craigslist app).

I like having the keyboard too because I can use the pad to navigate on sites that have flyout menus... it also provides a bigger physical platform to hold while surfing the web. I have NEVER found a web site I could not browse... forget mobile sites, the full version is what I go for because it works so well.

For an average user that doesn't want to learn a new technology, maybe the iphone is better. For someone with any kind of tech skills... go droid.

I also have a cheap ($190) Vizio tablet that is droid based and everything is in synch between the two which is pretty awesome. it's also nice to be able to give the tablet to the kids to watch movies on, play games, etc. and not be paranoid about a $500+ device.

There's all kinds of ways to rig that test, and you have a tester who is an expert at manipulating one brand of phone going up against amateurs. It must be a marketing video.

You could just as easily reverse the results by putting an Android expert, with time to customize widgets and shortcuts, against a casual Windows phone user.

On another note, I've been playing round with the RAZR Maxx and used turn by turn voice navigation, 4G data, GPS, Bright Display and cell phone calls and burned about 35% battery in 1.5 hours. There are three different GPS modes and satellite GPS uses the most power. 1) GPS via local wifi networks 2) GPS via cell phone tower triangulation 3) GPS via satellite (most accurate and power hungry). I had all three turned on.

I think the Nokia Lumia 900 will help Windows Phone break through. If Nokia brings the Pureview camera tech to the Lumia line, I will definitely make the switch.

As for the contest, obviously the WP guy is a marketing expert. This WAS at a CES booth in case you didn't pick that up. The WP (as far as I know) doesn't have widgets. It was able to do thos things so fast mostly because of its interface.

Stay away from Chicago if you have Sprint. I was with them for barely a year and average about 6 dropped calls a day. Was with Verizon for ten years and probably didn't drop 6 total.

Ah, I forgot to mention...! I finally did get the fabled update to Android 2.2 and remember excitedly loading my first Flash video! What a disappointment. If you're planning to go Android just because of Flash, re-prioritize now. Mobile Flash sucks! Choppy, grainy video that takes forever to load and just sucks away at the battery. Most websites these days have finally moved into the future with HTML5 anyway, which is fully compatible on iOS devices. Even Adobe has realized how much better HTML5 is and has discontinued development on Mobile Flash.

Not sure what device you had, but Adobe Flash Player 11 works great on my SGS2 and tablet. It crunches through videos not optimized for YouTube mobile, as well as all the lovely content Apple doesn't want you watching (aka adult content). I don't have a problem with pixelation or chopiness.

I have the Samsung Fascinate - it's the first generation Galaxy S on Verizon. Maybe the phone just can't handle it; who knows? I just don't think Flash should be a deciding factor when choosing a phone or tablet, especially with the shift to HTML5. And Apple doesn't care what you watch - after all, RedTube is HTML5 and fully iOS compatible! devil

No, my comment was just about Steve Jobs insinuating porn being available on the Android Market was somehow bad and that Apple was better because they didn't allow it.

True, the first Gen Galaxy doesnt compare to the SG2 and beyond. Giant leap forward in performance and battery life. My wife had a Samsung Epic, this thing crushes that one. Doesn't feel like it'll be dated for a while, and its old tech by today's standards.

And in all seriousness, they do now. Before they were Sony Ericsson. You'll notice the newer phones (like the Xperia S) just have Sony branding. Pretty nice phones, but a little chunky compared to the Razr and other newer devices. Processors tend to be a little behind the curve as well. The displays look great, though.

They will likely be coming out with one. There's a new coating being offered from HzO. Looks like Samsung is trying to get them to market by this summer.

And not to be outdone, Apple looks like they are negotiating with them as well

Casio already has one out called the G'zOne Commando. i had a buddy of mine get one because he's a fisherman and works at a marine lab. He was going through phones like crazy. While it's not the best phone from a specs standpoint, it keeps him from having to get a new phone every few months when he drops it or gets it wet.

After about one month with the iPhone after leaving droid, one key element that needs noting is battery life. My Evo droid would barely make it 4-5 hrs without needing a charge. This was with moderate phone use, an above average amount of texting and personal emails only.
With the iPhone, I now get my corporate emails on my phone and probably get about 150 a day. With similar phone and text usage as the Evo, plus the extra emails, my iPhone is still sitting at 37% battery life at 10:30pm.

Very nice not to worry about a charger every few minutes.

My SGS2 is at 47% after 15 hours off the charger with corporate and personal e-mails set to push, plus Words with Friends and a slew of other crap I have running on my phone. I can make it two days on a single charge, although that wasn't the case with my old HTC Hero.

The Evo is not indicative of the newer Android devices. That's a nearly 2 year old device and was really behind the times even when it came out. It's part of the reason why so many have a bad taste in their mouth with Android devices, can't say that blame isn't deserved.

The original EVO left a lot to be desired on battery power but the EVO 3D is a fantastic jump in battery life. I upgraded last June and the 3D has been a fantastic phone.

For the volume side, may want to look into an app to control that like

volume+ (Sound Boost). Looks like Nexus owners have started using it. It costs $1.62 but is might be worth it if your volume is low. You get a 15 min return window with Google Play store, so you could try it real quick and get a refund if it doesn't work.

Thanks! Yeah, I've looked into downloading one of those, just haven't yet. It's really only low while watching videos, which is odd.

It's part of the reason why so many have a bad taste in their mouth with Android devices, can't say that blame isn't deserved.

que the "oh, really" owl... I remember you guys talking about the EVO when it was coming out and you almost had me changing carriers. It was supposed to be the Greatest Thing since the last Greatest Thing.

Battery life is one of those things you don't know until you have one. It's one of the reasons why I recommend people use the device before they buy one, or ask someone who has one to try it. That was the worst part of the Evo. Battery life has always been pretty terrible on it. Unfortunately, it was one of the best selling Android phones ever and it left a sour taste in a lot of people's mouths.

I was a fan of the Palm Pre before it came out as well, as it had loads of potential. The problem is the hardware didn't match up to the OS. That's a little similar to the Evo. The Evo had a lot of potential and pitfalls. I have a lot of friends that got it and had to help them through it.

I wasn't sold on the Evo by the time it came out, because I knew Samsung was preparing to launch the Galaxy line of phones (one of the benefits of reading about what's next down the line). At that time, I was holding off for that as it had a better stat sheet than the Evo. Ended up opting to hang on to my Hero for another full year before I got the Galasy SII.

That's the best way to go about technology, in general: do your own homework, make your own decision, and try not to be an early adopter unless you're absolutely positive. Rarely does it work out when you jump in without checking the water. I suppose that's true with life in general.

I can vouch for RAZR max battery. Everything seems good but for the camera. Indoor pictures and video come out dark and the colors are off. I am not sure if I can resolve that easily via photo editing SW. That's the only disappointment so far.

I installed PDANet and was using it as a mobile wifi when driving from Miami to Ft. Lauderdale this week. The turn by turn GPS voice commands are great too.

I have had both and the last software "upgrade" for the Droid made me throw it out and go with the latest iPhone and very happy I did. I miss a few features like the removable storage, but very happy I have joined the iPhone clan.

Looking to the very near future, any opinions on the new line of Droid devices like the HTC one and the Samsung s3?
Especially considering lots of folks' iPhone 4 contracts will be up in June.

Neither the HTC One X or GS3 are out yet, so you'll have to wait until they are to make a solid decision.

Rumors thus far have the GS3 as the device to have, as far as Android goes, but the HTC One X has some impressive benchmarks early on. I'd personally rather have a Samsung Exynos processor rather than Snapdragon or Tegra 3 (which is what HTC is using).

No surprises with the iPhone really. You know what you're getting there.
