I was never a fan but got my wife to upgrade to a BB 8300 a few years ago: giant mistake. I guess that model for Sprint was a dud, as she had problems with it starting 3 months after she bought it. The last month or so before she qualified for an upgrade she was taking it to the Sprint store to get replacement batteries because it wouldn't charge. They'd give her a few batteries to last her the week and she was ecstatic when she got rid of it.

My wife's best friend just got one assigned to her for work. Trying to use that thing again was odd. The track pad on hers gets stuck a lot so she's constantly pulling the battery out to reset it.

Funny thing is I cracked out my old Motorola Q9c (I have all my old phones dating back to 2000) a month or two agao and powered it up for nostalgia's sake. I was still able to navigate it just fine, I was surprised at how comfortable and functional it still felt 3 years removed. If that thing had a bigger, better quality screen and a better processor I probably wouldn't have felt compelled to jump to Android. Main reason I got rid of that one to begin with was the phone started having problems charging and battery life was dropping drastically (needed to be charged mid day).

I also can admit and appreciate that if the iPhone had been available to other carriers when it launched I probably would have never even really looked at Android. I'm glad things worked out the way they did, otherwise Android wouldn't have had a fighting chance in the US.

Absolutely agree. I think that was a big blunder on Apple's part.

Looking back, other carriers had an opportunity to get in on it but AT&T ponied up the dough when the others wouldn't and also showed they had an advantage (GSM - simultaneous data + voice) over the others (minus T-Mobile).

As much as I hated AT&T in the past, I am with them now (although not necessarily happy about it though).

AT&T is really to blame for the sole sourcing of the iPhone here in the states. Apple not wanting to branch out to CDMA earlier was their fault, though.

Actually, it wasn't all Apple's fault. They reached out to Verizon first, but Verizon laughed at Apple's expectation of not adding extra VZW crap to the phone, so Jobs gave up and went to AT&T.

Partly true, however, AT&T thumped their chest over time that CDMA was not a viable choice for the iPhone due to limitations with voice and data. Hell, even China's massive CDMA network China Mobile wasn't able to convince Apple to make a CDMA version of the iPhone.

Some of that was caused by AT&T's deal with Apple. Still, Apple had an opportunity to drop out of their exclusivity deal with AT&T in 2010. This is about the time that Android started picking up steam, especially with the blitz Verizon put up. If Apple releases a CDMA iPhone, Android likely becomes the next Windows Mobile, WebOS, or Windows Phone. Instead, it's got almover 50% of the global mobile market right now.

http://www.androidcentral.com/bluestacks-enters-beta-1-brings-450k-android-apps-computers

From link:

After we got wind that Bluestacks was going to be releasing a beta soon, we could only wait with bated breath at what exciting new enhancements would be dropped on us come unveiling time. Finally, that time has arrived, and let us tell you, Bluestacks has made good on their promise to up the ante in terms of Android emulation.

Using their new "Layercake" technology, Bluestacks allows any Android app to run without issue on x86-based PCs. Games like Angry Birds Space run flawlessly, and hardware acceleration is not enabled, but works like a charm.

While this might seem like purely a novel concept at first, there's some far-reaching implications as far as pricing structures go. Angry Birds Space is roughly $8 or so for the PC version, but you can get the Android version for free and run it in BlueStacks.

The Sims: 3 for Android is about a third of the price of its PC counterpart, and you can run the Android version in BlueStacks as well. It's hard to tell this early if Android apps can eat into a PC version's market share, but the potential is there.

Not sure I follow. I read the story I linked to. I'm not sure what the lock is in reference to, unless you mean the thousands of comments below (I don't have time for that, most of it is bickering).

excitedly thought I won out of pure luck. However, I was quickly told that I lost. I asked for a reason and was told Windows Phone won because “it displays the weather right there.” That was rather unclear. I showed her my device which also was showing off the same information with two side-by-side weather widgets on the center home screen. After pressing for a better reason, I was told that Windows Phone won “just because.”

After trying to push for a real answer since I clearly won the contest by their rules, another Microsoft Store employee (possibly a manager) came by after noticing me asking more questions. Thinking on his feet, he quickly gave a ridiculous out-of-thin-air reason that I need to display the weather of different cities in different states and that “my phone could not do that”.

I calmly and politely tried pointing out that I was absolutely never told about having to show off two different states, but at this point I realized there was no point in even attempting to argue since the Microsoft Store employees clearly had no intention of even potentially discussing the possibility of considering me the winner.

Edit: I see the top responses right now are suggesting maybe it's because the lock screen was disable. Disabling the lock screen is a native feature of Android (it's always been a feature since I've had one on my original HTC Hero), so I don't see how you can disallow that. If that was the gripe (I'm not sure it is), then you could disallow any advantage Android has over WP7 and of course win every contest. But isn't the point to compare advantages of the OS? In that case, being able to disable the lock screen gives an edge to Android in regards to speed. That's how I see it at least.

The whole reason I posted the story was just because I found it humorous. MS Made good on snafu, but I think most people can see through the whole marketing plan.

Oh I agree 100%. I was just surprised at how much bigger it was than my Galaxy S2 which has a 4.3" screen.

It really does a decent job of bridging the gap between phone and tablet.

And if you have huge hands, it's much more comfortable and easy to use than a smaller phone.

FWIW windows phones arrive with no lock set. Both phones have the ability to be locked or unlocked. One was and the otehr wasn't.

But you could say the same thing about the tiles and the widgets. Both had already set up a way to speed up this particular task.

At any rate, I think what they're trying to do is show the capabilities of the phones and the unique interfaces available for common tasks. Hopefully they can get the market share > 2% sometime in the futre....

Bart,

Very cool sig! Huge WP fan here. Getting my Titan II on Monday. MS has a very strong mobile OS. I would encourage all of you Google/Apple fans to give it a look. Great user interface, the live tiles are innovative and MS Office in integrated. Also, the wider selection of handsets. Apple still rocks that same old tired form factor.

The real game changer will be the launch of the next version (apollo) and Microsoft's tablets.

I think WP is a fine OS and there are good phone options. I don't believe, however, you can make an argument that there are a wider selection of handsets with WP vs Android. There are more than a dozen Android devices on just about every major carrier.

I'm not a fan of the style of the interface. It's very similar to what I have with Windows 8. The tiles feel clunky and unintuitive for me personally. I'm sure I'd get used to it over time, but I have no motivation to do so now.

I ran Launcher 7 for Android (a WP themed home launcher) for a week or so and just didn't really dig it. I don't like the "single" screen style, but that's just a personal preference.
4/2 11:20 PM | IP: Logged
Compared to Apple they offer a wider selection of handsets. I think Windows Phone is a nice in between option to Apple. It's a closed platform, minimal fragmentation (so far) but with multiple OEM's to choose from. The OS also has a simplicity to it. I've felt like Google is a bit more complicated for the average user.

However, both Apple & Google have had very good marketing campaigns. Microsoft (with Nokia's help) is finally becoming more agressive in this segment.

The tiles do take getting use to. Espicially if your running Windows 8 consumer preview. Which is truly designed for (in my opinion) a touch screen.

Keep in mind, however, that the Nokia Lumia 900, which is to be released on the very same day for only $99 on contract, is one pretty capable Windows Phone handset as well. That is why our HTC Titan II vs Nokia Lumia 900 specs comparison is something you may want to check out first. Additionally, we have an HTC Titan II hands-on review waiting for you as well, assuming you want to learn more about the upcoming handset.

Full Specs - Titan II

One thing I keep seeing over and over with WP's is the apparent huge bezel at the top/bottom/sides of the phones, compared to Android and iPhone. It's probably just the amount of black on the actual default screen itself, but it looks odd to me.

4/3 10:10 AM | IP: Logged
It shouldn't go unnoted that WP is benefitting greatly from Android due to:

1) A large number of handset makers paying licensing fees of up to $10 per Android handset sold (See Motorola, HTC, and and up to half of total Android device makers). It's said that Microsoft makes more money for each Android phone sold than it does from sales of their WP's.

2) Many of the phones being put out (with the exception of Nokia) are multiplatfor based devices. In most cases, Android's device is released first, with a sibling device also released for Android. As of now, Nokia is the main WP exclusive manufacturer. Being able to sell a line of hardware on several platforms lowers development costs and saves the consumer money.

As for Android, Samsung, Motorola (now owned by Google) and Sony are the big Android exclusive makers (primary high end devices, not including proprietary OS devices).

Competition is good and the consumers ultimately win. The battle of lawsuits that's been going on for the past couple years between Apple, Microsoft, and everyone else is driving up costs and stiffling innovation. I hope it comes to end sooner than later, but I doubt it will.

The Titan II is manufactured by HTC. It has a 4.7 inch super LCD screen. It has a design similar to the Galaxy Nexus.
1.5 GHz snapdragon S2 processor
16GB
512 Ram
Full LTE support
16 mega pixel rear camera
1.3 mega pixel front facing camera
720p HD video recording

I'm a big fan of the 4.5 - 4.7 inch screen size. Personally, I feel that the larger screen size really optimizes the Windows OS. The platform was designed for the larger phones.

The Lumia 900 is a stellar device. I just wish it was a little bigger.
4/3 10:50 AM | IP: Logged
I'd say it compares more similarly to the HTC One X, which is its Android counterpart. The Galaxy Nexus has a curved screen and is quite a bit different than conventional styling (For better or worse)

Here's a comparison of the two.

http://geekaphone.com/compare/HTC-One-X-vs-HTC-Titan-II

A couple screen shots from the comparison link above. The screen on the HTC One X is worth noting. Some reviewers have said it has the best screen on a phone ever, regardless of platform (yes, including the iPhone).

GPS on Android is hands down better than iPhones (trust me I drive 800-1000 miles /wk)

Also, Android has removable battery, memory, and you DONT have to install iTunes on your PC

Plus Android devices come in all shapes and sizes and are completely custom to you.

You can also completely customize your dashboard.

Google is better than Apple. EVERYONE uses Google, not everyone uses Apple.

iPhones are outdated. No 4G!!!

If I were you I would look at the Razr 4G Maxx for Verizon. <---- 4G phone with a bad ass long life battery. Its made of Kevlar and Gorilla glass

They also make Android devices with full QWERTY keyboards.

Typing on a touch screen is NOT the same as a real keyboard, especially if you are multi-tasking.

Also as an FYI, there is no blackberry "server". It's simply software loaded onto your companies Exchange Server.

Cables are cheap

Doesn't matter to the average user

MotionX GPS Drive is great on the iPhone, not sure what is better functionality wise on Android.

Battery / memory is a nice feature, but the sleekest of Android phones don't allow the batter to be changed either. Don't need iTunes on the PC. It's not a requirement anymore with iCloud.

Many users just want the phone to work, not to tinker with it or load custom software.

Again, many folks don't tinker.

Not everyone uses Google. Not everyone uses Apple. You can use your google stuff on an iPhone.

The next iPhones will have 4G if that's important to a user. For me I'm usually on WiFi and have no need for 4G, especially on a phone.

All that said, people should just pick what they want and what they like to use in the store. I didn't want an iPhone when I bought my 4, but everything else I used at the Verizon Store at the time felt like crap in my hand and didn't work as smoothly as an iPhone.

Cables are cheap? Where do you buy your cables? Cheapest iPhone USB cord I've found that actually works (ie doesn't give me a OVERHEATING device warning) is from iConcepts. I think I got it at BigLots for $8. Most others are $20 to $25. That's not cheap to me.

I got a MicroUSB/MiniUSB split plug with car charger adapter at Walmart for $4 (they carry them right next to the register, works for any device not just Android). That's not even the cheaptest price I've seen, that's a regular priced cord at pretty much any Walmart.

Walmart doesn't carry off-brand cords, so when my wife was on the road in Orlando in February and her iPhone cord got mauled by the automatic seats in her car(The connector got stuck in the track of the seats, which automatically adjust when you get in/out of the car), she had to drop $25 to get one from the nearest Walmart.

One complaint I have about i-devices is they tend to have compatibility issues with using non-official connectors and peripherals. This is no unlike Blackberry's, which my wife had issues with in the past. My old mini-USB cords for my Motorola Q9c wouldn't work with her Blackberry.

I bought three of the $4 micro usb cables for my Samsung and they worked great for charging, but would not do data transfer. Haven't tried them for data transfer on the Lumia yet.

They work fine on my phone, although I rarely transfer files using a cable these days.

Ok Desi.... I just got approved for an upgrade of my work phone. I'm researching the available models but thought I'd list them here in case any of them stood out to you.

Motorola Razr
Droid 3
Droid Bionic
Droid Charge
Incredible 2
Droid X2
Motorola Razr Maxx
Droid 4

I can also get an iphone 4s I believe but I prefer the android phones.

Looks like the Droid Bionic is the best from the reviews I've read so far.
