Typical UF crap - even from Machen.

1. Makes claim UF is "oldest" school.

2. Makes backed-into grab for "flagship" title.

Just the facts, Bernie. Leave the UF booster crap out, please.

It will never end with these people. Keep your powder dry, Seminoles.

For anyone who thinks these claims are beneath university presidents and mean nothing I beg to differ. When a professional academic like Dr. Machen resorts to such specious claims it means these assertions mean a lot to his supporters.

This is why FSU, under President D'Alemberte, restored the 1851 founding date. This is why FSU reached back to the founding date used by the pre-1905 school that would become Florida State University.

It's amazing this kind of thing matters, but it does. It also shows just how insecure the UF folks are to dwell on this even today.

Dr. Barron should never lose sight of this fact.

Do you consider the founding date more significant than, say, the last 100 years?

No, but that wasn't his point.

River, if you think UF has been some kind of dominant state U for about 100 years you're about as misinformed as Machen and I suspect the vast majority of UF supporters. Even as the state women's college FSCW was larger than the fledgling UF until around 1920. Then FSCW beats UF to Phi Beta Kappa by some two years, 1933 to 1935.

Then even in the 1990s and likely earlier, (records I can find are scant) FSU had a better student graduation rate (and likely better FTIC stats), though certainly some of this was due to sports success.

Give it up.

US News rankings started in the 1980s. Was FSU ranked higher than UF then? If everything you say is true, it certainly must have been.

Machen backs up some of my previous comments over the past year or so when he "brags" about how approx 10% of UF's student body (5,000) are ONLINE student enrollees.

Online student enrollment is a major money maker for FLA Univ...as Univ can basically charge full freight (tuition) and not have to build new classroom buildings, new parking garages, or hirer more profs (percentage wise) while raising student enrollment and tuition income.

Below is President Barron's presentation to the same committee.

US News is a terribly flawed system.

Not to mention Machen himself says the US News ratings are worthless. Of course, Machen also got caught gaming the US News ratings AFTER he said they were valueless.

Here's the 2004 St. Pete Times article where Bernie assesses the value of US News ratings.

He calls the new U.S. News & World Report college rankings "a rip."

Dr. Machen got this right. Then the UF Kool-Aid got to him.

Machen may have been being sneaky in his "oldest" comment. UF was the first to commonly refer to itself as a university (vs college)...so that's sometimes how they sneak in the distinction. In the State of Fla:

FSU is the oldest institution
FSU is the oldest campus
FSU was the first to have students
FSU was the first to hold classes
FSU was the first to issue degrees
FSU is the only one that existed before/during the Civil War

I was actually curious, so I tried looking this up. I couldn't find anything for FSU from that far back, but I did see that US News didn't give every school a rank back then (From what I see, after a certain point they just divided them into "quartiles" or "tiers" depending on the year). UF didn't receive a specific ranking until 1996 according to the only data I found for UF. So it's probably not very easy to compare any data before that.

Time to write to our representatives again and remind them that the horribly undereducated rubes in their districts who are not "gaders" are still afforded the right to vote.

This.

I knew the US World & News Report was worthless when they were ranking Executive MBA programs that did not exist at some universities. I'm finishing up my Executive MBA at the University of Notre Dame and our class was upset that we were ranked #6 in the Wall Street Journal and did not participate in the US World News. Come to find out the program director said US World New report was ranking EMBA programs in the Top 20 that did not even exist. To say they are worthless is an understatement.
