The highlight of the weekend was the tribute to Varitek, love when a player manages to stick with one team his whole career. Fortunately catching isn't a problem since he retired, but starting pitching is. Valentine has a problem with both Lester and Beckett, what to do? At what point do you say enough is enough? We don't have a big margin of error now with a lot of competition for the wild cards.
The Lester thing is really odd. Beckett, I get. He's kind of a scumbag, and he's known to have a poor work ethic in recent years. Can't be shocked when he goes off the cliff on the Sox like 1996 Roger Clemens. But how the heck did Lester go from an excellent pitcher to an awful one? I guess injuries is the easy answer. But what injury?
In any event, it's July 23 and the Red Sox are in last place. Probably won't last for long, but I'm enjoying it while it does.
