I get to watch 'em since the first time since opening night tonight in Memphis.  Watch me jinx 'em!
11/16 11:25 AM | IP: Logged Yeah Knicks are shocking me. How do the Spurs blow that home game when Carmelo is a no show on offense? Biggest surprise is Knicks improved D.

Happy to welcome the Knicks to the Grindhouse tonight. Will also happily hand them their first loss.

My name's not Jeremiah nor Daniel, but boy did I call that one!  (A 2nd night of B2B on the road may have had something to do with the Knicks' s***ty performance this evening, as well.)
11/16 11:31 PM | IP: Logged Clippers are doing some things this year...big win over San Antonio last night. That's twice already that they've beaten the Spurs.

I'm looking forward to Lakers/Nets tonight...start of D'Antoni era?

Which did not get off to a good start in losing to the lowly Kings.

Dallas at least handed NY it's second loss in the return of Jason Kidd to AA Arena. I'm guessing Cuban and Kidd did NOT exchange pleasantries. .
11/22 11:16 AM | IP: Logged Love the medias Laker obsession. Another bad Laker loss isn't about the poor performance by the team, its about the courageous 12/28, 40pt 10 turnover 3assist effort by Kobe with the plague. Geez, give the Pacers a little credit for finally getting a road win aside from the Wizards. Lakers chemistry is awful

God, the Celtics added a few decent key role player and they are getting blown out by the Nets, the Celtics are well below where I thought they would be.

I can't turn on any sports radio without hearing about the Lakers. I don't see them doing well under D'Antoni. Kobe is up there in age as is Nash and I don't see Gasol, MWP or Howard running up and down the court all night under this offense. This team might not fit Jackson's triangle offense, but I think it would be better to run Jackson's triangle rather than D'Antoni's run, gun and no defense offense.
11/28 8:51 PM | IP: Logged I agree Manch, Lakers can't make up their mind about a style and with those old legs and Kobe not sharing the ball with the big men they are in trouble. Wonder if they all make the all star game even if they're still around .500 by then?

Any suspensions for celts nets?

Stern can really overreact sometimes...threatening to sanction the Spurs for sitting players is ridiculous

"I apologize to all NBA fans," Stern said in a statement. "This was an unacceptable decision by the San Antonio Spurs and substantial sanctions will be forthcoming."

Link: link11/29 8:36 PM | IP: Logged Stern has to say that for a big prime time game. I get why Spurs do it but seems kind of weak as others don't do it and not like Spurs have won a title in a while.

That being said Heat took the night off and needed to lose to get the message. Found a way to win otherwise not much positive for heat they need to start taking games seriously at some point.

Not sure I would agree, as long as I can remember teams have rested older players. In addition, what does not winning a title recently have to do with resting players?
11/29 11:01 PM | IP: Logged It is weak...he should've rested them last night against Orlando. Not only does it make more logical sense but it also gives us a real Heat/Spurs game. They probably beat Magic with the team they trotted out tonight. (Sorry Magic fans)

It's November. If these millionaires can't play back to back nights that's a culture problem. My point was if Pop doing this during the season leads to deep playoff runs and titles its less of an issue for me but it hasn't paid off the last few years. Looks like coddling IMHO though he's still a great coach.

And I didn't even get into the effect on fans being annoyed at the game or brings big national TV game.

It was the 4th game in 5th night on a long road trip, if the NBA wants to avoid such  issues,  work on scheduling.
Pop has four titles, and the best record in the league the last two years, I think he has the gravitas to "coach" his team how he sees fit.

As to the fans:
If a specific fan bought a ticket for that specific game, yes that is unfortunate, but a coach should never manage his team counter to what he feels is best because a fan may become upset.
11/30 9:29 AM | IP: Logged No arguments on the scheduling quirks. every team gets a few easy spells and 4 in 5 road spells, makes no sense.

Just for kicks, Imagine if an NFL coach did this say on a Thursday game after a late Sunday night overtime game in late September. Would not be tolerated.

If I was the Spurs I would go back and find every game that players were ever sat and ask why those teams were not fined.

Are we talking about the Miami fans that went to the game or watched on TV? I doubt many of those were tuning in or went to the game to see the Spurs' players. And those casual fans that tuned in on TV I'm guessing were more interested in seeing the Heat players. Perceived to be boring, the Spurs just don't draw many eyes to the screen for whatever reasons.

Pop might have done it differently but personally I have no problem with what he did. And apparently most support pop in this issue.

$250,000? Chump change. They pay backups sitting on the bench more than that.
12/2 8:46 AM | IP: Logged Just read Kobe's latest "u all suck I'm amazing tirade." That guys ego is epic, screen and roll sacrifice ha ha what a selfless human being. as long as he's gunning and Pau and Dwight only take 11 shots a game each this recipe will never work. Kobe has to become an all around player and leader and take way less shots. Keep big men involved and go through them. Hopefully he never figures it out. Fun to watch the circus.

Awesome League Pass night! Wizards beating Miami and Lakers blowing a huge lead to Houston and losing. LA is still a complete mess...D'Antoni is 3-5 as head coach.

Yeah I'd rip on Lakers, but upset of the season as Heat playing hard only the final 2 minutes finally caught up with them. Spoelstra has got to reach these guys, though Lebron is playing great minus missed 3's late, they are coasting still and playing no defense or attacking the rim. I like that they're loose but they didn't even sound mad they lost after the game. might take a few more bad losses to start playing better. Knicks Thursday may get their attention at home

yikes, just heard on ESPN that D Howard has missed 42 free throws in the 4th quarter this year. 108 total misses
closest in 4th is Hansborough with 10
total misses with 32 is Blake Griffin

ZBo dropped 38 and 21 boards last night. Too bad he will probably not start the all star game due to Griffin.
12/5 12:33 PM | IP: Logged When did Lebron head back to Cleveland? Oh wait his teammates jerseys do say Heat.....the supporting cast sure hasn't shown up this season or the last few games. Yuck hope Knicks win by 30 to wake Wade and the rest up

I didn't get to watch that game (screw you Comcast for regional sports network that won't be on AT&T) but anytime the Lakers choke against Houston is great in my book!
12/7 8:59 AM | IP: Logged Interesting note post game embarrassment:
Wade and his career worst -33 was out of arena first.
Lebron worked out after.
I agree with Barkley, Wade got old fast . We saw it during the playoffs and now we've seen it a lot this season. He's looked explosive only once on offense so far and is the worst defensive guard on the roster right now. if he doesn't get his legs by February this team is very beatable without a big man. Lebron can average 30-10-10 and it won't matter without help. I'd like to see Spoelstra bring Wade off bench until he's fit and has a better mindset. He's clearly disinterested in ball right now.

This Heat team kind of reminds me of the second Houston championship team ( although they will be better than a sixth seed)....

they will kind of sleepwalk until the playoffs then start killing people
12/7 10:25 AM | IP: Logged Interesting on that Rockets team, but they did add Drexler mid season. Heat need a big man defender I still say to be a repeat winner. So far Riley seems intent to keep the end of bench guys making too much

Do you guys think that Mike D'Antoni might have been a bad choice? Watching this Lakers team, they look about the same as under Brown. Nash could/will certainly make a difference , but comparing contrasting what Woodson ( who was  not great in Atlanta) has done in relation to D'antoni , maybe that Phoenix run was just the talent, nit the team.

12/7 11:21 PM | IP: Logged I never thought much of D'Antoni. That Phoenix team had no business missing out on the Finals every year in their 2-3 year peak. But it's hard to call him a flop with LA until he's got Nash at the helm. Chris Duhon at the point just isn't going to cut it in his system.

Posted from wireless.rivals.com

Posted on 12/8 8:06 AM | IP: Logged

Yeah Nash will improve it however the media keeps referencing Nash like its his MVP years. He's a horrible defender and has lost a step on offense. so I'm not sure they're suddenly going to catch fire just because he returns. Lakers problem is defense. Dwight over helps on everything and they have no perimeter D, Nash won't improve that in fact he will make it worse.

15/28 on 3's and lakers still lost another home game. Lakers now 1-9 when Kobe scores 30+. Jazz comments after no surprise, bad d and no ball movement are why Lakers keep losing.

Okc and Knicks playing some really good basketball early in this season.

Sorry Lakers fans...but I'm really enjoying all the chaos out there. Right now that whole thing is a disaster.

Do you guys think the quality of play has been better this year with a normal schedule? Haven't heard any of the pundits discuss it yet...but I think so. I've watched a lot of really quality bball. Seems like the injuries are down and there aren't as many teams resting players with minor or fake injuries. (Minus Popovich)

wow, talk about a kick in the nads for Portland 28 years later

Bowie talking about predraft leg exam

From the documentary "Going Big," which airs Dec. 20 on ESPNU:

"I can still remember them taking a little mallet, and when they would hit me on my left tibia, and 'I don't feel anything' I would tell 'em. But deep down inside, it was hurting. If what I did was lying and what I did was wrong, at the end of the day, when you have loved ones that have some needs, I did what any of us would have done."

Link: Sam Bowie admits to leg problems12/11 7:46 PM | IP: Logged Crazy on Bowie.

Nice rivalry budding with Knicks and Nets. Nets got screwed on a lot of calls late but hopefully these two meet in the playoffs. Nets still play too much iso.

I agree level of play much better this season overall so far. Definitely more rest between games is helping IMHO

Nice write up by Ian Thomsen on Bernard James in the Get to Know him section

The 6-foot-10 rookie center is averaging 3.5 points and 3.4 rebounds with the Mavericks. James, 27, was picked in the second round (No. 33 overall) after spending 2003-08 in the Air Force, rising to staff sergeant with tours in Iraq, Afghanistan and Qatar.

? He was a lost soul as a teenager. "I was a know it all, I just thought I had everything figured out. People would tell me I was doing something wrong and I wouldn't listen, or I thought I would be better off if I did something this way.''

Why don't the Lakers trade Kobe's awful salary instead of Gasols? Kobe makes an insane 27 million this season, or 10 million more than LeBron. And next season Kobe becomes the second NBA player in history to make 30 million, MJ the other, that is crazy! Lakers can get a lot more for Kobe and take more money off the books.
I'm sure it won't happen but Kobe's lack of effort on defense is appalling. So are his wages.

Posted from wireless.rivals.com

Posted on 12/14 7:29 AM | IP: Logged

I'm guessing they don't b/c Kobe is far more of a star for the Lakers than Gasol is. Kobe puts more people in the seats than Pao does.
12/14 6:58 PM | IP: Logged

Speaking of crappy defense, the Celtics are showcasing a lot of that this year. They're bumbling around from game to game with no consistent play what so ever. Watched them get pasted by McHale's Rockets a couple of nights ago. Still waiting on Avery Bradley's return, he seems to galvanize the team defensively. Courtney Lee has played well and Sullinger's had his moments, even Jeff Green is turning it around. For whatever reason, they have a hard time stringing together a solid four periods.

12/17 9:47 AM | IP: Logged
Hollinger leaving ESPN, one of my favorites on ESPN.com

And so, after nearly eight amazing years at ESPN.com, I'm seizing an opportunity with theMemphis Grizzlies, and I couldn't be more excited about what lies ahead. I'm moving on, but so is the field of basketball analytics, and it's continuing to head to a better place.

Link: link12/17 10:33 AM | IP: Logged That is sad I enjoy Hollinger too.

To me Celts look old moving their feet on D, Garnett and Pierce mainly. Rondo has never been a stop the point defender as he gambles a lot so suddenly looks like their pieces don't fit IMHO. I think if Celts don't get hot they move someone and change style a bit.

Warriors really impressing me, their guards are streaky but they're actually playing defense and sharing the ball. Hope they keep it up they have a great playoff venue.
