I still say X had the most raw talent of any QB that's come through here.

I would say that AD McPherson had the most raw talent of any QB since Charlie Ward.  Although his gambling/check cashing issues outweighed his talent level.

My boys, being big and athletic does not constitute being a QB.  If that were so, the NFL would have nothing but those types of players starting.

I think Anquan Boldin was the must talented HS QB we ever landed.........Did not get the opportunity to develop it at FSU............................

Xavier is playing in the arena league, that should tell you his talent level.

Thad Lewis, the guy from Duke is starting in the NFL on sunday.

Xavier Lee was a lot less talented than us FSU fans want to believe.

Talent is also not just your athletic ability, it also involves mental make up of a player.

who cares about his talent or what happened here, cause that was an awesome highlight.  Poor little defenders.

Umm remember Bobby Bowden begging Anquan to stay at QB and Anquan refusing...it paid off for him.....

Chris Rix, Anquan, AD, Xavier Lee that's 12 years worth of 5* eligibility that was wasted. New regime... EJ Manuel, we're not exactly off to a glowing start. Let's hope Winston and/or Coker even get a chance to buck the trend. So tired of watching inferior talent take the field.

As one of my old coaches said, "it ain't like we're out there splitting the atom." Athletic prowess surmounts all else, but you can't get a chance to show that prowess on the bench. Imagine how demoralizing it must be mentally for some of these guys to sit behind other guys who have no business being on a FSU football scholarship, much less starting. We need a culture change and we need it now. Jimbo hasn't proven to understand what got the winningest coach EVER in CFB fired in the first place. And Jimbo certainly doesn't have the leverage of a Coach Bowden. Next year's QB DECISION (not battle as the story will be made out to be) could be the beginning or beginning of the end for Coach Fisher.

He was 1-0 vs. Nick Saban.

Not even Anquan would agree with this, he was a better receiver and safety prospect than a QB

We don't remember it because it didn't happen, Fabian Walker was the QB our coaches really wanted to groom. Boldin was NEVER considered an option at QB as a recruit and we had Jared Jones and Walker ahead of Boldin as QB options after they were all on campus. Boldin was given a chance at QB that is true but he couldn't win the job.

FSU had a ton of QB talent that never lived up to their billing:
Chris Rix ( came close )
Fabian Walker ( transferred )
Adrian Mac ( booted from team for stealing )
X. Lee ( tons of talent less of want to )
Dan Kendra ( just wasn't in the cards )
Jared Jones ( rather break in neighbors and steal hotdogs ended up transferring )
EJ Manuel ( like Rix came close but never reached potential )

Dan Kendra was our most touted QB recruit, but he had the injury his Jr. during spring practice. It would have been sick what he could have done at QB.
12/29 12:23 PM | IP: Logged

Absolutely correct! Just sad what talent we had there that just received NO coaching-up. Just wasted talent!

Kendra never showed a sinle glimpse of potential stardom, healthy or not
12/29 2:16 PM | IP: Logged
Well, the atom part is true.

But none of the FSU part is, including anyone getting fired.

Sooner or later people will put together a pattern of player development.  Too much talent to blame just the player.  In some of these guys cases, they had some off field issues obviously, but FSU has squandered some talent.

And exactly what was your expectation of EJ?  I for one would not put him on this list.

Rix's last pass as a 5th year senior was across his body into a triple team for an INT in the end zone. Lee's last three passes as a starter were grounders. AD threw the NC State game. I don't care how good or bad the coaching was, these guys were not major leaguers. Jared Jones would never have started. He couldn't hit the broad side of a barn in warmups. Kendra was a better fullback. Bunch of misses along with poor o-line play led to the end of our run.

Good measurables does NOT equal talent!

Being a great athlete does NOT make you a great player. If it did, then a lot more Olympians would go on to make lots of money in the money sports and there would be fewer stars who go on to be busts at the next level.

In Bowden's first 25 or so years, we recruited a lot of good to great athletes, many of whom were also really hungry and determined to work hard, learn the game, be accountable to one another, and become great players and winners. After Richt left and the coaching staff declined (for a variety of reasons that have been discussed to death here over the years), the program just didn't do as good of a job identifying high school players with the mental makeup to go along with the physical abilities to translate into on-field talent and success.

Most of the 5-star players sighted as examples of our inability to develop talent did not develop with other coaching staffs after they left here either.

The fact is that a 3-star talent with 5-star mind will have a much better career than a 5-star talent with a 3-star mind.

Per an article in the "Osceola" at the time, Anquan Boldin was promised a chance at the QB position and stressed to the staff during the recruiting process that he wanted to play QB. In his first practice he was so far down the depth chart he was doing almost nothing and decided to ask the staff if he could work out with the WR's. He then worked out with them and told Bowden he did want to play QB anymore he wanted to be a WR.

This is just nonsense.  Kendra was looking great in the Spring 98 practices, and looked great in the game he started against Wake (true, it was Wake, but he looked good).  He was the 1st string qb before he blew out his knew in the spring game.  By the time he came back, Weinke had locked down the job as qb, so he made the switch to fb to be able to get some playing time.

Wow a 5* that is running over people who were probably working at a McDonalds the day before or at Joe's Car Wash.

Xavier was a HUGE disappointment and thought his given talent would carry him to stardum forgetting he had to learn to play the qb position at FSU.

Watching him on the sidelines chit chatting and hanging out instead of having his head in the game and not caring about what was going on was the most upsetting.

That is what I love about Winston.  He is giving the team high fives as they come off the field, he is right there learning from Jimbo and getting the knowledge soaked in.  It is just exciting knowing what we may have with Winston.

Xavier is right where he needs to be.
