I have to say this thread is bringing back some memories. I was one of the fat guys that in the third period of the drills was wondering how in the hell the Wr's and DB's were moving that fast. I will say I watched a guy in my line run off the mat and straight into the wall. He did not put his hands up to block it, he was actually trying to knock himself out but it did not work. I would have laughed but was too tired at the time, but rest assure we still rip on that guy to this day! I think one key difference now also is the rule changes the NCAA has placed on Two-a-Days. Many of players due to injuries would have to go double duty in scrimmages morning and evening and then be ready to do it at the same intensity the next day. I always thought that was harder than Mats, but I was a lineman we did not get to put the different colored jerseys on. I am curious how we have handled the rule changes because that is last and final opportunity to get better and ready for the season. Has to be the most critical time for a football team. That's just my opinion but every one has one and they usual all stink.

nolewr,

On the day that DD died, do you remember what other players were in his group, and what specific coach(es) were directing the drill? Just curious. Thanks.

not the most appropriate question asking which coach ran the drill..

espy,

Just wondering about your judgmental statement. Why is it "not appropriate" to ask a question on a message board what players and/or coaches were directly involved in a tragic accident that has greatly affected FSU (and probably still does)?

Stanton, I agree with you 100%.

Who made anyone the moral authority here??

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the subject, IMHO.

Another question:

When I was a freshman, I took basketball coaching in the gym inside the Moore Center. Did that get torn out with the remodel, or did they just turn that into the "turf room"? Along those lines, what the heck is the "turf room"??!!

Hey Osceola Guys!!

I vividly remember a story you guys did about a guy in the athletic department who went through Mat Drills so that he could report on just how hard they were.

Is there any way to find that article in the archives and re-post it?

Former players: awesome thread. Thanks for sharing this info with those of us who only dreamed of wearing the Garnet & Gold. We saw the "glory"--interesting to read about the guts it took, too...

Mats are basically non-stop agility drills that occur before the break of dawn. Three main areas. One was outside under the stadium and consisted of running type drills (Coach Van, "get those glutes"). The second was on the old basketball court and consisted of a shuttle type drill (Mickey), jump rope and one station I can't remember. The third was the real mat drills that consisted of monkey rolls and other type of agility drills (Amato). All but a few of the drills always began and ended with being in "football position" while chopping your feet. You also had to sprint through for a few yards at the end. If you didn't do it perfect, the whole group had to go back.

In fact, I believe the morning began with everyone assembling on one room for stretching and then getting in the perfect football position while chopping your feet. Can't remember if it ended that way as well. Just doing that made your legs burn.

There were trash cans everywhere, and people used them.
