JB was a steriodic maniacal a-hole. I personally saw him and Eric Reinhardt smash a guys head into the concrete wall of an apartment wall at Casa Cortez in October 1987.

Posted on 5/20 10:37 AM | IP: Logged

I think that party was at my house and I seem to remember it a little differently. JB was a pretty good guy. Like I said he was one of those guys you would want to walk down a dark street on the wrong side of town with. Him and a guy nobody seems to remember were in my eco class, John Wyche.

I do remember Wyche. From the broken leg in Hogtown in 1987, to him havng a monster game vs. UF in his final game in Doak as a senior in 1990.

Great player for us.

I remember that... and I remember Odell's quote to him, that pretty much tells you what Odell is all about:

"Get up! Don't let 'em see you hurt!"

UF 96 was the loudest Doak has been during the day.

Posted on 5/22 11:29 PM | IP: Logged

I was there. One of the very best games ever at Doak. In those days the toss sweep was a thing of beauty.

Posted on 5/21 12:10 PM | IP: Logged

Great story, Lulu.

I was a junior in HS and watched the game in my bedroom. Growing up in the Northeast the Canes were the team along with ND, but I despised the trash talking Canes and their fans more than anything. And even though I ended up at Arizona State three years later, that ass whooping made me a Nole for life.

Other than Dexter's 47 and the flag on Clark's head, I remember with most delight Kirk Carruthers's spirited play (as an undersized LB--16 tackles, 2 picks, 1 fumble recovery) and P.T.'s 50-yarder to Ronnie Lewis off the goal line. We've seen that play much more often in recent years--but in 89 is seemed far more gutsy to come off the goal line like that.

That fumble on the goal line happened right in front of our seats...it seem to be loose forever before Kirk jomped on it. If that play was in a movie there would have been 15 cuts from the time the ball was fumbled till it was recovered.

About John Brown, its a long story involving a broken arm, mutual doctor and an FSU trainer, but the jist is I was introduced to JB while he was the doorman/bouncer at CJ's during Nickle beer night. From that night on, he always let me and my guests avoid the ridiculous line that happened every Friday night.
The guy never forgot me even a year later. So of course, I thought the guy was pretty cool. But I tell you what, he ruled that door and place without question. He wouldn't hesitate to kick anybody out for any infraction. And any pretty-face girl who thought they could use their looks and a bad ID and talk their way in were roundly rejected. I knew a Tri-delt who said her sisters hated CJ's cause they couldn't get the younger ones in. Sometimes just watching JB work the door was entertaining as hell.

Still my favorite FSU game and quite possibly the loudest Doak has ever been. When Leroy made the pick, and Dexter went 37 for the TD, the place nearly went to the ground.

A friend fell and broke her leg during the celebration and refused to leave the stadium until the game was over. Hard core. The EMTs took her away after the final gun.

One of the best evenings of football in my live. That was one helluva football team.

I could not agree more, still one of the best football experiences of my entire life...being in that crowd that night and feeding off the energy is something I will never forget...I wish I had that game on tape...

Posted on 5/28 7:41 PM | IP: Logged

I was 9 when that game came on TV and I can remember Leroy making the pick and I had that feeling that we were about to score. My brother and I had the same feeling when we knew Dale Murphy would hit a HR, and we could usually call it before it happened. When they ran that sweep to Dex I knew it was to the house.

Miami and FSu were so good during those years, and every game felt like it was the MNC. Usually it was too!

Except that year, the loser of the game (UM) actually won the MNC. But most experts admitted that FSU was by far the best team in the Nation that year especially by the end of the season...just couldn't give an NC to a team with two losses. Damn it.

I still have a shirt that says "State Champions 24, National Champions 10"

Posted on 5/29 10:55 PM | IP: Logged

We had 220 yards rushing that night. Dexter had 142 yards himself. I think Edgar had another 50 or so.

Posted on 5/29 10:22 AM | IP: Logged

That was against a really good UM front four. Greg Mark, and three other guys whose names I cannnot remember. Also, Bernard Clark was an excellent LB.

Posted on 5/29 9:11 PM | IP: Logged

The referee for that game was a good friend here in Fort Myers, Joe Rider, who at that time officiated a lot of our games (after we joined the ACC the conference rarely allowed him to call our games, as he was a Floridian and his daughter attended Florida State). Joe has always stated that 89 FSU/UM was the most electric game he ever called. When Chief Osceola came out Joe was scared to death that there was going to be a pregame fight and he was at the center of the field trying to keep the two teams apart when suddenly the flaming spear hit the ground right behind his foot. I was at that game also and it definitely rivals the 1980 Pitt game for the most electricity ever in that stadium.

Posted on 5/29 10:55 PM | IP: Logged

The '80 Pitt game was amazing. Unfortunately I was on the road for the '89 game and had to watch it in a bar outside of Cincy...

I am with ya. After the game the fans didn't want to leave the stadium. We were still yelling an hour AFTER the game in the stadium. I remember walking thru Bert Reynolds dorm and the middle LB at the time (I forgot his name) just walked out of his dorm as we were walkng by and I recognized him and said "good job man" and we shook hands and he gave me a hug and started jumping up and down and screeming. It was awesome! Then later at a party we were just going crazy and a motorcycle cop came up to me and said yall need to calm this stuff down and for some idiotic reason I put my arm around his kneck and said yeah but how 'bout them noles and he just shook his head and rode off. Tallahassee was off the hook that day for sure.

Posted on 5/21 2:13 PM | IP: Logged

Watched it on TV and the camera was shaking from the crowd noise, the best ever game on TV.

Agreed. I was only a FR in high school. That game, on tv at least, was my all time favorite. I wish I had a copy on tape. The crowd seemed awesome the entire game.

Posted on 5/22 11:20 AM | IP: Logged

I was in the stands for the game, and I do believe it was the most electric Doak has ever been, with the possible exceptions of Pittsburgh in 1980 and UF in 1996. I couldn't talk for a week, broke my thumb on a drunken high-five gone bad after Leroy intercepted the ball, and just lost it When Dexter scooted around the corner.

amazing game.

Posted on 5/22 1:50 PM | IP: Logged

My fourth year at FSU and my first win against my Miami. I was in the Marching Chiefs. I know its cliche by now, but the play I always remember was Dexter Carter putting the flag on Bernie Clark's head and then just walking away. That happened right in front of where we were sitting.

Posted on 5/20 1:44 PM | IP: Logged

That's an awesome story. Thanks for sharing LuLu!

I think he gave you one play because he knew that was all you could comprehend.

John Brown was in my economics class, great guy, but that dude was a few sandwiches short of a picnic.

Posted on 5/20 9:22 AM | IP: Logged

Lulu, do you know where JB is these days?

Posted on 5/20 9:53 AM | IP: Logged

At the end of the season, I think that was the best teanm we ever had.

Posted on 5/20 10:24 AM | IP: Logged

Laughing at the John Brown comments. When we scored the 3rd quarter TD to go ahead 21-10, he was one fired up dude.
