I must add in another JB story of my own. In summer of 1987 I roomed with JB at cash hall apartments (while Reynolds hall was under construction). We had driven to the fieldhouse in my car one afternoon to work out. JB was known for his short temper. Well, on our way back we were cutting around to Woodward and turned to go in front of the old Pike house. There was a block party going on so I cut up the first side street over to Woodward and I had gone maybe 50-yards when 5 guys stepped off the walk and into the road right in front of my car where I had to jam my brakes pretty hard to stop. All 5 guys were just sort of strutting and staring into my car and it was dusk with my headlights on so they probably could not see us well. Well JB reaches over and lays on my horn while he starts cursing and a couple of the guys flick us off while they all start walking really slow on purpose. Next thing I know, JB shoves me and yells get out and before I can even step all the way out of the car he has leaped out and run to the front of my car. I could tell they had finally gotten a good look at him by the looks on their faces as he went from one to the next challenging their manhood and calling them every name in the book. It was pretty hilarious to listen to them grovel and apologize. Fortunately that was all that came of it and we went on home. Lets just say, rooming with JB was a trip!

Lulu, any idea where JB is these days?

Dexter toss sweep around the corner and away he goes TD Noles!!!!
Penman launched 4 rows down with several other Lambdas by his drunk ass crazy cousin on top of a scared to death family....great night.

My all time favorite game in Doak. Electric is the only word to describe it......the stadium was literally shaking ...

Hey Penman, my dad is a Lamda also. Good times.

I hate to say it, but not starting until 92, I don't know this game as well as others. Any thoughts on finding a DVD of the game?

I would like to know this as well. I only started watching in middle school 1990. I have never seen the '89 game other than the "Dexter Flag" incident. I was living in Tx at the time so it wouldn't have been on TV anyway.

These JB stories crack me up. I saw JB go off on some dude at the Phyrst. Chased him across the street into the parking lot and who knows what happened. A few minutes later JB returned to the Phyrst and I didn't see the guy he was chasing again.

I remember walking through the tunnel under Pensacola well after the game and the entire crowd was STILL chanting F-L-O-R-I-D-A..........

Posted on 5/25 2:27 PM | IP: Logged

Still the best game I ever been to. These stories are great. Every now and then I pop in an old VHS tape I have of the game--grainy as hell. My favorite part is listening to the Ron Franklin gush like a school girl as he introduces the "very fast" Miami defense, and then hearing his astonishment when Dex run right by them.

That was the loudest and most exciting game I ever saw. Period.

Couple of memories....My brother in law, who was a huge Miami fan came with us to the game. I bought him this flouresent green Miami shirt, so he would stick out like a sore thumb. He loved it too because liked to talk trash with the fans around us. He was REAL cocky from the time we left our tailgate in the old intramural fields behind Dick Howser, till we got to our seats. Oddly I too felt REAL good about the game. I mean we beat Auburn AT Auburn the week before and the hype was not as big in the press as before since we had lost the first two in a row. And Miami was coming in #1 with all sorts of attitude. And when I got to my seats, it was so packed, that you could not sit down, so we just stood and when we jumped on them during those first 2 plays, you knew you were in for "one for the ages" as a 'Nole fan, and I immediately looked over at my bro in law and he looked like someone had just kicked him in the nuts.

Besides those two plays the other two back to back decibal bangers were when Kirk Carruthers recovered that Miami fumble at our own 1 yard line in the third quarter, than on the ensuing first play from scrimage, P.T. launched that bomb to Ronald Lewis at like the 50 yard line from our own end zone. The place went nuts. We march it the rest of the way down the field on the ground and put the game away.

What a night.

1. We beat Auburn in Tally.

2. I am pretty sure it was Shannon Baker that caught the PT pass but I may be wrong on that one. Ronnie Lewis caught touchdown to win the Fiesta Bowl against Nebraska.

Well...one for two just like me.Wink

Maybe it was the liquor that night or just my need to remember Shannon Baker actually making a big catch.

Posted on 5/28 2:26 PM | IP: Logged

MJS, you are correct that the Auburn game the week before was in Tally. But Ronald Lewis was the one who caught the pass from PT, not Shannon.

Ron, I believe JB is in Orlando. I haven't talked to him in years but Alan Stewart still talks to him frequently.

I am still amazed that we had some many consistent runs on counters, sweeps, and draws into the middle of that vaunted UM D-line that night.

Carter, Bennett, Lee, all three popped of 5-8 yard runs repeatedly into the teeth of the Cane defense.

Great job by the line that night...............

The tape I have of the game shows a graphic that says we were averaging 8.3 yards per first down play midway through the third, most of those plays being draws and sweeps like you said. The line blocked its ass off that night.

It was an awesome game -- we've had several of those in Florida State's history with more to come!
