Florida wideout hoping for big offer

A month ago Miami (Fla.) Archbishop Carroll wide receiver Rodney Smith was drawing a considerable amount of attention from a bevy of different programs, but offers weren't rolling in as frequently as he may have hoped.

Just a few weeks later, however, the floodgates finally opened as Smith received scholarship offers from an array of schools such as Colorado, Colorado State, Tennessee, Missouri, Auburn, Ohio, and Rutgers, adding to his previous list of Florida State, Minnesota, Ole Miss, as well as a few others.

"A lot of my offers have just come in over the past two weeks," Smith said. "It is kind of crazy. I am taking (my recruitment) pretty good. I am just taking it in and getting ready to weigh my options."

Even in the face of all his new offers, the 6-foot-6, 202-pound receiver's interest lies primarily in two schools who have yet to give him an official offer in Ohio State and Notre Dame.

"(Ohio State) would be in my top two," said Smith, who is currently ranked as a four star recruit by Rivals. "(My top three) would probably be Ohio State, Notre Dame, and LSU.

"I am very interested in (Ohio State). I believe it is a good program, they have a good team, and they are a good academic school as well. I am really interested."

Ohio State co-defensive coordinator Luke Fickell visited Smith last week to express interest and converse with the explosive athlete. In his junior season, Smith tallied up 650 receiving yards and eight touchdowns while also posting three interceptions - one that went for a touchdown - and 35 tackles on defense.

"They like me a lot, but they haven't really come through with an offer yet and really let me know that I have an offer," Smith said of Ohio State. "I told them everything and that I am really interested, they just haven't come through with that offer.

"(Coach Fickell) said he was going to go over my film with the wide receiver coach, but he still hasn't let me know yet," Smith added. "It was really good to see coaches come down and see me because that shows they are interested in me, but I am just hoping I can get an offer now."

Notre Dame has also held back an offer, but Smith was quite sure one from the Fighting Irish is on the horizon.

"Pretty much they are going to offer me, but they are just waiting for my test scores to come back," Smith said, "then they are going to send me the papers letting me know I have an offer."

Smith has aspirations to one day suit up in the NFL, something Ohio State has had a good track record for in terms of Buckeye receivers who have been drafted and found success at the next level.

"I feel like I can be a future NFL receiver," Smith said. "People tell me I have the frame to be a good receiver in the NFL and I am just looking for a school that can help me get to the next level and I feel like Ohio State could be that school."
